What is the surest indicator of a great nation, the achievements of its rulers, artists and scientists, or the general welfare of all its people, as the speaker asserts? I agree that the welfare of the people, including living conditions, social security system, and public facilities, is one reliable and essential reflection of the greatness of a nation. Nevertheless, it is actually the achievements of the rulers, artists and scientists that help bring and maintain those welfare.

Undoubtedly, when we evaluate the greatness of a nation, there is no other better criterion than the welfare of its people. No matter what the social nature a nation is, the final and exclusive goal is to maintain the happiness and prosperous of its citizens. Consider that the vast majority of people complain a lot every day and suffer from their life, definitely the country they live in has severe problems and is far from greatness. We can also tell that people in advanced country are often more satisfied with their welfare than those in developing countries.

However, as we are enjoying such satisfying welfare of the society, we cannot ignore our artists, scientists and the governor, because it all owes to their achievements. Developments in science undoubtedly have brought a lot convenience to our life. For example, the invention and popularize of automobile makes it easier and faster for us to go anywhere we want. In the twentieth century, the spread of Internet and personal computer has soon changed our way of living by adding a lot convenience: now we can chat, play, study and shopping without even going out of our room, moreover, knowing every thing happened in anywhere of the world instantly by surfing the Internet. Also, improvements in medication help overcome severe diseases like Tuberculosis to make people healthier.

Our artists have played a crucial role in promote people's welfare, too. Enjoying the beautiful scenery at the city centre park, having a visit at the city museum, or even simply walking along the road seeing all the fabulous architect, one cannot deny the achievements of the artists influence us significantly in a positive way and help form and raise our moral and ethical standard.

Obviously, only have advanced technology and arts cannot ensure the welfare of the people. The most fundamental factor is a stable and harmonious society, which can only be obtained by a better government and its rulers. Only when a nation has a strong military and policies making sure that their people enjoy free equal rights and liberty, do the citizens have a basic possibility to enjoy the welfare.

To sum up, even thought the welfare of its people is an essential factor when we assess the greatness of a nation and it honestly reflects the situation of a society, the speaker overlooks one important thing—all these welfares are the production of the achievements of those scientists, artists and rulers. While the welfare is a reflector, the developments in science, art and the basic living insurance are the inner motivation that of equal importance.
