TOPIC: ISSUE235 - "Most people are taught that loyalty is a virtue. But loyalty-whether to one's friends, to one's school or place of employment, or to any institution-is all too often a destructive rather than a positive force."
WORDS: 453
I don't quite agree the speaker's point of view that loyalty is always a destructive force. Destructiveness which caused by lacking loyalty is often more serious than these caused by excessive loyalty. Also, this destructiveness (caused by excessive loyalty) is not the fault of loyalty itself sometimes.
Loyalty is the basis for trust between people. In traditional Chinese culture, if a hero - whatever in literary works or folklore - is loyal, even if he did not get significant achievements in enterprise, his friends would always support him and assist him. Contrary, if a man always betrays his friends, he may get short-term success, but in the long run not only his friends will distrust him, but his family will also desert him. It is said that loyalty is a kind of cohesive force, with it friends can close together and enterprises can develop well. So no matter to a person or to an organization, loyalty is necessary.
But unfortunately, in today's world, loyalty seems be weakened by people. In marriage, divorces are increasing. Many young couples seem to look divorce as a fashion, and they may divorce for some miffs in daily lives. In commerce, conditions are worse, job-hopping is frequently occurring in business companies and disclosure of business secrets has become the norm. For example, some employees worked for a company last month, but a month latter they go to rival firms and disclosure commercial secrets to this company for their self-interests. Although this kind of mutiny is not as serious as the mutiny in a war, the destructiveness to companies may fatal. As you can see that lacking loyalty may more dangerous than full of that.
Admittedly, people often realize that some destructive forces such as chauvinism and irrational frenzy are caused by loyalty and that this destructiveness is also amazing. History shows that in World War II, Japanese militarists use the loyalty of Japanese people to there emperor to bring world a disaster. But this is not the fault of loyalty itself. Loyalty is just one of many virtue of human nature, if once people's virtue can be used by other people to harm the society it is a destructive force, then our kindness, courtesy, humility and many other virtues can be recognized as destructive forces too, because they all can be used by wrongdoers. Loyalty itself is a positive force. Really destructive forces are forces which conduct positive forces to wrong ways.
In sum, loyalty is always good, without it our matrimonies, companies and enterprises will be jeopardized. And despite the sometimes blind loyalty may be the source of destructive forces, this is not faults of loyalty itself, this is faults of unscrupulous malefactors who take advantage of people’s loyalty |
