On the whole, I agree with the topic saying that the artists give society something of lasting value because famous and worthy works of art come from artists, who endue the art rich connotation and wealth. While the critic works to make discussion or evaluation of visual art. The responsibility seems the medium connecting art with the public. Efficiency of art handing down produced by critics cannot be ignored, and even, they accomplish the evaluations aimed at various arts which can determine the fate of certain work of art to be gold shining in public or to sink to the bottom inexorably.


Artists are the persons who invest individual thoughts and feelings into the work of art. It is no doubt that absence of artists’ skillful hands and inspired brain would definitely result in nothing. Even if the greatest critic of the world is present, he can’t make something out of nothing. As for Sunflowers by Vincent van Gogh, it revealed a glorious and resplendent scene. Van Gogh painted it using brilliant colors and to show his strong craving of the beautiful world filled with hope and sunshine, although his life was miserable and about to end. His work full of appetence for life and bright is in marked contrast to his tortured life. However, it is the striking contrast that numerous people cannot help to be affected by the intense emotion. The painting lives throughout the ages, the precious value of which is created by van Gogh exhausting his whole life. Even later, an English critic said (and I paraphrase):“He used all energy to pursue the most simple and ordinary thing of the world, that is the sun. ”, yet the attractiveness of the twelve sunflowers are not coined by the critic. No artist, no art and no lasting value for the society.

An art critic is a person who specializes in evaluating art. They write critiques, or reviews published in newspaper, magazines, and books and on web sites. Usually, art collectors and patrons utilize the advice of critics as an important way to enhance their appreciation of the art they are viewing. Critics play a role to introduce works of art to the public. Not all have professional standards to appreciate and criticize arts as great or worthless; not all have sensibility to touch the thought and soul of arts. Actually, many artists were largely ignored during the greater part of their lifetime. Many dismissing artists are venerated now. Critics have devoted great strength for this. Without them, maybe some works with rich artistic value cannot get away from the fate of disappearance forever. Additionally, critics criticize works of art and excavate the real worth in the context of aesthetics or the theory of beauty, and then record their charm in art history.

What is more, critics’ evaluation of visual art would be benefit for artists’ life for the art and improving their artistic value. Through referring critics’ criticism, artists would accurate the advantages and disadvantages of the work and enhance their art technique or expressive force or others. Thus, sometimes critics would offer great assistance to make arts and artists rise fame in art circles and the public, and possibly push artists’ creative work to new heights.

To summarize, there would be nothing without artists. Artist is the host of the work of art including art value, however, the art cannot lack critic whose taste for arts directs public attention and appreciation to works of art. Sometimes, critic seems a judge of talent, who would seek out the genuine gold.
