Art, as an important part of human’s civilization, has been largely influencing our daily life with its eternal and universal values. Almost always along with artists, the maker of art, critics has also been contributing to turn these values more easily interpreted and extended to more people.
Art, a word comes from the Latin word ars which could be loosely translated as ”arrangement”, is commonly regarded as the act of making art working by using human’s inspiration and imagination. One of art’s functions is to provide the pleasure to the people who enjoy it. When we see the delicate arrangement of a series of colors, sounds, words or movements, we get this pleasure which even last for a long time. Even now when we see the sweet smile of “Mona Lisa”, the great painting work of Leonardo Da Vinci, we still appreciate a kind of joy, a kind of appreciating beauty. No matter how many times of enjoyment of the ballet show Swan Lake, the beauty of delicate movements and shows of ballet actors or actress’s at the stage are the same.
At the same time, critics contribute to maintain these lasting values by evaluating art works, which attracts the attentions of ordinary people and also help to get it understood easily. Imagining if there are no such critics who interpreter these art works and promote the values of the some great one, how would people be able to have the chance to understand and enjoy this pleasure. Without the contribution of critics, Vincent Van Gogh’s hundreds invaluable paintings would have still been kept in a secret corner, thereby no talking about the lasting values to the society.
Except giving pleasure and expressing some universal values like humanity and beauty, art has also didactic function, which is also involved with the contribution of critics. When we see a deeply moral play or movie, we often can’t help comparing ourselves with the characters in the plot, from which we could imagine our own destinies and find the problems in the human relationship. From Shakespeare’s novel character Macbeth, for instance, we know that the inordinate ambition leads to great human tragedy. At the same time, the creation of art work is often implicitly or explicitly influenced by critics. By evaluating the art works and introducing them to the people, critics, to some extent, create a certain standard and guidance for artists. They could be regarded as a bridge between the artists and the other people. With these guidance or standard, the artist gives lasting values to the society, which may be sometimes accepted by the society many years after their deaths. The evaluation of critics serves as a filter which helps us to distinguish which art should be accepted and treasured and makes sure that something like anti-humanity work should be discarded absolutely.
Artists and critics are in a relationship supplement between each other. Artists use their talents of creativity and imagination to express what they feel deeply to the society and create arts works which will be evaluated by critics. The feedback from critics, the constructive criticism, can be taken by artists to reconsider their work, which results in a better work next time. And the promotion of great work by critics is also very important for artists’ art work to be accepted by the society and to become the lasting values to the society. Historic experiences shows that the lasting values of society are usually those which have be created carefully by artists and evaluated by critics many times and then accepted by the society.
