Should all faculty be asked to spent time on the professions relevant to the courses they teach but outside their academic world in order to improve the quality of instruction? I tend to agree with the writer. I concede that it's not the only way to raise the quality of instruction; however this suggestion is really necessary in contemporary university and college.

I think it's impossible to improve the quality of classes in university without asking the professors to spend time in professions relevant to the courses they teach. Everyone will feel not familiar about something if they don't always work at something about it or long time not think about it. As every junior student know after a long summer holiday, when students back to school and need to write something they always feel like they never wrote before. n my view the teacher will also feel not so familiar about what he/she is about to teaching if they don't sometimes work in professions relevant to the courses they teach. As I know not too much of the faculty's courses are close to their academic world. Some of them may be hesitate in speaking during the classes. What’s more if a professions spend enough time on what they teach they will know the recent development of the professions relevant to the course. Their students will be able to know the most up-to-date science and technology. So all faculty should be required to do like that, to make sure students learning the exact, effective and new knowledge.

Going too far is as bad as not going far enough, meaning redundant work outside the academic world may do harm to the instruction. If a instructor spent too much time in works about the courses they teach, they will be depend on their experience too much, so it will be hard for them to accept new knowledge. So appropriate is the best.

However, asking the faculty to do like that only maybe not enough to raise the quality of instruction. Sometime it’s hard for some professions to exactly express themselves. So offer the chance for some of the faculty to take a lesson about the speaking skills will make advance of the instruction's quality.
And it's also necessary to asking the students practice more about the courses, especially for some engineering course. More test, experiment, practice and research will help them to understand the courses better.


To sum up, Asking all faculty to spend time working in fields relevant to the courses they teach is not the only way but an very effective way to raise the quality of instruction which mean a lot to a university or a college. We also can do some other things to accomplish that.
