TOPIC: ARGUMENT209 - The following recommendation was made by the Human Resources Manager to the board of directors of the Fancy Toy Company.
"In the last three quarters of this year, under the leadership of our president, Pat Salvo, our profits have fallen considerably. Thus, we should ask for her resignation in return for a generous severance package. In Pat's place, we should appoint Rosa Winnings. Rosa is currently president of Starlight Jewelry, a company whose profits have increased dramatically over the past several years. Although we will have to pay Rosa twice the salary that Pat has been receiving, it will be well worth it because we can soon expect our profits to increase considerably."

The author recommends Rosa(R) to take the place of Pat Salvo(PS) because of the profits have fallen considerably and the former have done well in Starlight. However the recommendation is quite unreasonable since all most every reason used to support it is dubious.
Firstly, the author blames the falling rate of profits to the president PS, which is not unreasonable. As a unity, a company consists of a lot of departments and members, and the each of them is responsible for the profits of the company. From any objective perspective, the profits of a company, up and down, but not strange, since there are many factors takes into effect, the market environment never stopped its changing. Especially, with the precondition of economic slump, profits fallen is not worse than bankrupt, so there's possibility that we have to thank to PS to keep the company survive. That is the say we should not blame the president before verifying that PS is the person to blame.
Secondly, the resignation of PS may not necessarily bring the conversion from the fallen of profits. That is to say, no matter whether PS is to be blame for the decline of profits, we should not ask for her resignation in return for a generous severance package, since we are not sure about the negative effect to that. We all have been told the crucial of the president to a group of a company, and also people should make a decision before clearly known the both side of it.
Even assumed that the Fancy Toy Company has to ask for the resignation of her, the appointment of R is not convincing. Firstly, before detailed consideration, we are not sure whether R performed excellently over the past several years. There's the possibility that though the Starlight Jewelry's profits have increased dramatically but still lower than the average standard of the same trade. We should weight all the factors that may influence the profits' rate of the company before pass judgment on R. Even if the author has substantiate that R do really excellent, that is still not enough to guarantee the expectation of profits to increase. That's because the business of a toy company may be greatly different from that of a Jewelry company, from the enterprises structure to the corporate culture to the way of operation. May be R is familiar with Starlight Jewelry, we are not sure whether R can handle the practical situation of the Fancy toy company. It is so fishy about the recommendation of R to take the place or PS.
At the level of profits, the author just tell us that the company have to pay R twice the salary that PS has been receiving, but whether it is worth is left to be proved and demonstrated. Since we have no idea about how much PS has receive, and also how much the author plans to pay R and how much R may earn for the company, no matter the expectation of profits through substitution of R for PS.
In summary the recommendation suffers logical flaws as given. To make it well reasoned, more information about both PS and R are required. Also more detailed evidences are need to make a reasonable decision. |
