TOPIC: ISSUE88 - "Technologies not only influence but actually determine social customs and ethics."

As we review history, we can see how profoundly science and technology have changed our lives. Not only in agriculture and industry we achieve the mechanized large-scale production, foods and industrial products multiply, but also in arts, the way artists create new work are more various than before. And now, the question is whether the technologies have influence or determine the customs and ethics? To answer this question I divided it into two levels: influence and determine. And I will discuss these two levels.

First, since we have mentioned the word ‘technology’, we have to consider another word ‘modernization’ because these two words are link together in today’s world. The purpose of introducing newly technologies is to realize modernization. So to understand the influence of technology to social customs and ethics is to study the relationship between modernization and customs. And to further understanding of this question, a concrete example is needed. Many Oriental countries can be examples to explain the influence of modernization because these countries all introduce techniques from Western, and at the same time they absorb some western customs. The following paragraphs I take Japan for instance because the history of Japan in last century could be more obvious well explain the question.

When the Meiji Restoration introduced Western science and technology to Japan, Western cultures also permeate in this country. Thus, the economy of Japan was increasing quickly, but the rapid modernization has brought many problems. And these problems manifested in the culture and social customs is the cultural invasion. That is to say Japan has lost some native social customs and ethics. Now when you walk in the streets of Tokyo, you may still see some Japanese elements, such as kimono, sumo, etc. But are they origin originally? Are they the same as one or tow hundreds years ago? Certainly not. Historians do have vivid metaphor: Japanese culture is like an onion, we can see each piece of culture clearly, but we can not find its core. Because each piece contains foreign cultures and each one is a fusion of Japanese culture and Western Culture. So we can say that to be influenced is certain.

However, can technology determine social customs and ethics? I think it can not. If assume that technology do determine social customs and ethics, then Japanese culture should disappear. Since the technologies which Japan introduced is form America and European countries, and these technologies have already determine the Western Culture, so present Japanese culture should equal to Western Culture. But the fact is opposite, and the assumption does not hold. Perhaps, there are some other factors together to determine social customs and ethics. But I but inaccurately know what they are. Maybe history is an important factor. If people have preserved the history, they will preserve their customs and ethics.

All in all, technology can influence social customs and ethics, but it together with other factors that common determine them. Maybe as technology develops, people had to make a choice between modern and traditional customs and ethics.

First, since we have mentioned the word ‘technology’, we have to consider another word ‘modernization’ because these two words are link(link:动词和名词,be relative to each other) together in today’s world. The purpose of introducing newly technologies is to realize modernization. So to understand the influence of technology to social customs and ethics is to study the relationship between modernization and customs. Thus, the economy of Japan was increasing quickly, but the rapid modernization has brought many problems. And these problems manifested in the culture and social customs is the cultural invasion. That is to say Japan has lost some native social customs and ethics(has lost 太绝对,partly, mostly等等限定下). Now when you walk in the streets of Tokyo, you may still see some Japanese elements, such as kimono, sumo, etc. But are they origin originally(不明白)? Are they the same as one or tow (two)hundreds years ago? Certainly not. Historians do have vivid metaphor: Japanese culture is like an onion, we can see each piece of culture clearly, but we can not find its core. Because each piece contains foreign cultures and each one is a fusion of Japanese culture and Western Culture. So we can say that to be influenced is certain.

However, can technology determine social customs and ethics? I think it cannot. If assume that technology do determine social customs and ethics, then Japanese culture should disappear. Since the technologies which Japan introduced is form (from)America and European countries, and these technologies have already determine the Western Culture, so present Japanese culture should equal to Western Culture. But (nevertheless)the fact is opposite, and the assumption does not hold. Perhaps, there are some other factors together to determine social customs and ethics. But (however)I but inaccurately know what they are. Maybe history is an important factor. If people have preserved the history, they will preserve their customs and ethics.

All in all, technology can influence social customs and ethics, but it together with other factors that common determine them. Maybe as technology develops, people had to make a choice between modern and traditional customs and ethics.
全篇从影响与决定两个角度分析了日本文化的例子,但是若能增加其他小事例说服力会增加。
另外注意关联词句,尽量避免重复。加油!
