In general, I agree with the speaker's assertion that it is very important that scholars and researches pursue their individual interests. However, I don't think it is reasonable to ignore making a contribution to the larger society.

To begin with, there is no denying that pursuing individual interests can stimulate one to do research. Einstein said, 'Interest is the best teacher'. The saying is constantly used to point out that interest plays an important role in one's road of pursuing the knowledge and truth. We can see no further than Isaac Newton who was very interested in physics when he was younger. He thought the physical problems day and night even when he enjoyed the cool air under the apple tree. The result is well-known that an apple fall down and hit his head. By enlightening this, he discovered one of the most important physical laws, the law of universal gravitation. Without the pursuing individual interest, Newton could not make a great contribution in the development of physics. So pursuing individual interests is necessary for the research of scholars and researchers.

However, it is also important to make a contribution to the larger society for scholars and researchers. For one thing, modern research always needs a great of money which comes from the society. If society invests huge human and material resources to research while the scholars and researchers who directed the research projects have no idea to make contribution to the larger society. Their actions equal to waste other's money. For the other thing, if the scholars and researchers don't consider about the influence of their researches to society, it is possible that the results of their researches will bring chaos to society. Another can support the idea is Clone. If a scholar doesn’t take account of the influence of clone, and develops the technology of Human Cloning. The similar case like in file The Sixth Day may be happened in yourself. How do you think when faced with another you who has replaced you in your home? In short, scholars and researchers are all members of society whose living and researchers are supported by society. Therefore, it is their fundamental duties to make a contribution to the larger society and make sure their research will not damage the society.

Last but not least, we should also realize that the contribution of a research sometimes may not be immediate and obvious.
When Michael Faraday invented the electric generator, a lady asked him how his invention contributed to the development of society. Faraday answered, ‘can you tell me what a baby who is born just now can do?'. The story tells us that the contribution of a research cannot be predicted immediately. The invention of electric generator is a milestone in the physics, but Faraday still could conclude what is its use. Let alone some researches that are not as important as the invention of electric generator. Therefore, the contributions should not be required to make immediately for scholars and researchers.

To sum up, scholars and researchers, as members of society, have the responsibility to take into account the influence of their research results and try their best to make a contribution to society. At least, the research should not be detrimental to the society. Under the premise, it is advocated to pursuing their individual interests.
