144"It is 本来想先对lasting value做一个关键词分析的,结果憋了半天不知道该怎么解释,结果还是算了……就按照大众的写法走吧……

the artist, not the critic,* who gives society something of lasting value."
*a person who evaluates works of art, such as novels, films, music, paintings, etc.

The relationship between arts and its evaluation is like the relation of a product and its label. The evaluations given by critics, no matter good or bad, offer the public a criteria to appraise arts. Critics are not the ones who give something of lasting value, but the necessary part to help forming the lasting value.

Critics play a very important role in our society to help people better evaluate the art. Without critics, some masterpieces will not be understood and valued by the public.

Take paintings for example, many great painters have extraordinary talents; the paintings reflect their hearts and thoughts that cannot be easily comprehended by ordinary people. Van Gogh, one of the greatest painters in nineteen century, was not appreciated by people at that time; though his paintings worth millions of ponds decades years after his death, the only painting he sold when he was alive just cost four ponds.

Such phenomenon also happened in the realm of literature. Cao Xueqing, one of the most famous writers in China, known by his The Story of the Stone, one of the four classics, led a tough life as a poor writer and died penniless. Cao gained neither wealth nor fame when he was alive, but after his work made public, critics apprised him as one of the most talented writers in Chinese history.

Evaluating the worth of art is a very important duty for critics especially in antiques. People always confused about the worth of heritages. What makes a small teapot, which seems ordinary, priceless and what makes a decorated teapot, which seems fabulous, worthless. Critics set a criterion to assess them.

Critics not only set prices for masterpieces, but also lead the trend for arts.

Every year, many ceremonies are held to award good works of films or music, like Grammy and Oscar. The audiences enjoy such entertainment, actors gain fame from award, but the most important thing for playwrights and directors is the trend of filming. Critics play a key role in leading the public to certain kind of works. Music critics often do the same thing, when they appreciate some kinds of music; the public will follow their favors that cause the fad in one kind of music.

Nevertheless, the public not always blind. A truly great art will be valued by people in any period of time, and the appraisal of it will change by no means. Like Beethoven, made his debut with great success when he was eight years old, is still well-known as a great musician; the music he wrote was not only famous then, but also regarded as classic now. Take another example, Qi Baishi, one of the greatest painters in twenty century in China, well-known by his painting of shrimps, was already famous when he alive.

The real values of art which is lasting are made by artist, but the critics play a significant role in discovering the great works that have been overlooked. Thus, we cannot deny the effects of critics in bring something of lasting value to the society.

这两段不是在说C的不好吗 怎么插在这里。

Critics play a key role in leading the public to certain kind of works. Music critics often do the same thing, when they appreciate some kinds of music; the public will follow their favors that cause the fad in one kind of music.

Nevertheless, the public not always blind 和哪个承接??前面不是说public没觉悟. A truly great art will be valued by people in any period of time太绝对 前后矛盾 前面的生前无名何解释, and the appraisal of it will change by no means. Like Beethoven, made his debut with great success when he was eight years old, is still well-known as a great musician; the music he wrote was not only famous then, but also regarded as classic now.
