TOPIC: ARGUMENT179 - The following is a memorandum written by the director of personnel to the president of the Cedar Corporation.

"It would be a mistake to rehire the Good-Taste Company to supply the food in our employee cafeteria next year. It is the second most expensive caterer in the city. In addition, its prices have risen in each of the last three years, and it refuses to provide meals for people on special diets. Just last month three employees complained to me that they no longer eat in the cafeteria because they find the experience 'unbearable.' Our company should instead hire Discount Foods. Discount is a family-owned local company and it offers a varied menu of fish and poultry. I recently tasted a sample lunch at one of the many companies that Discount serves and it was delicious-an indication that hiring Discount will lead to improved employee satisfaction."

The argument presented above suffered from several flaws. The president of Cedar Corporation (CC) concluded that they should hire Discount Foods (DF) instead Good-Taste Company (GTC) to supply food in CC's cafeteria and that was based on some unfairly assumptions. Let me discuss them below.

To begin with, the three employees who complained could not represent all the people who have meals here. Because we don't know the quantity of the whole cast in CC. And the bigger the number is, the less reliable these complaints are. What's more, the author just tell us that those complained employee could not bear the experience, but we don't know whether the food supplied by GTC is the reason of the "unbearable experience". If it is not, then CC doesn’t have to change the cook company.

Secondly, the author failed to summarize a complete comparison of GTC and DF. Though the price of GTC has rise and GTC refused to provide meals for people on special diets. But it is possible that DF's price has increased too, and DF doesn’t cook special diets as well. May be the rise of the price was led by inflation, the price of all the things are increased, therefore the GTC could do nothing but rise the meals’ price.

In addition, no evidence was showed to prove that DF is the best choice. The author said that DF offers varied menu of fish and poultry. Yet there must be many people who don't like fish or poultry, so hire DF to manage the cafeteria may make more people unbearable. Though the president himself like the dishes which was cook by DF he tasted, it does not indicate that all the people of CC would like the foods DF did. And

What’s more, maybe hire DF would expense more than GTC.

Last but not the least, there may be some other means to solve the solution. Such as, to discuss to the GTC’s managers to let them know the requests of CC's employees and make them do better, like cook special diets for special people. Or just hire another company to supply foods for the cafeteria.

In sum, the conclusion the author made is unpersuasive. To strengthen it, he should check all the information about the two companies and analyze their feature individually, and then make the final decision.
