235"Most people are taught that loyalty is a virtue. But loyalty—whether to one's friends, to one's school or place of employment, or to any institution—is all too often a destructive rather than a positive force."
Loyalty, as a virtue, is highly valued by the traditional and modern society. To some extent, loyalty coexists with the progress of the society. In our youth, we are often taught by our parents and teachers to be loyalty to others so that we would be in a win-win atmosphere. However, some extremely negative events in our history reflect the destructive effects of loyalty. We are encountered to gain a balance view of the relative merits of loyalty.
Loyalty is vital for the thriving of a team. It is possible for an individual to complete a task all by oneself in the old times, but now, one can hardly manage to handle a problem without teamwork. Time limited and energy limited, only through loyalty to the team can we win through to absolute victory. Loyalty to the team converge the members' power to the most efficient point. Let us take the 2010 World Cup for example, German wined Argentina with a score 4:0 not for their superior skill, but for their loyalty to their national team. Their being loyal to the nation's reputation is widely applauded by the mass global media. On the contrary, if everyone act as their individual will, the team's performance will be inward-looking and badly hindered. No one can deny the axiom that loyalty to the team greatly explores their potential energy.
Not only is loyalty vital for the thriving of a team, but also it is the best defense of a country' interest. Patriotism is the highest level of loyalty. Other factors, such as the high-tech weapons, the good training of the soldiers, and the abundance of materials can be subjugated, meanwhile the loyalty to the motherland cannot be conquered let alone how powerful the aggressors are. Take a well-known case for example, in the Second World War, the Nazi invaded the Soviet Union and dominated a large part of the territory. Cases were that the training and weapons of the Nazi army are of no doubts in the favorable position, finally the SU casted the Nazi out with the people's loyalty to the country. Mutual loyalty of the government and the citizens effectively strengthens the country.
Admittedly, if the original aim of loyalty is distracted, misguided loyalty may attribute to drowning the moral and ethics. Both the jingoism and chauvinism are products of ill-controlled loyalty. During the Second World War, Nazi's successful propaganda conditioned the Germans into madness. They were firmly searching for their "living space" regardless of the basic humanity principles. Millions of Jews were massacred in order to purify the so called races. Taking a deeper scrutiny of the history, all of the destructive events in the history are more or less related with the abuse of loyalty. In addition, when it comes to the friendship, the ill- loyalty to our friends sometimes bolsters the harboring of the criminals. Are these positive to the justice environment in our state? The answer is definite no.
Judging from the discussion above, we may safely come to the conclusion that loyalty is of necessary to our teamwork and our motherland. Loyalty uniforms our tenet and elevated our power. On the other hand, we should also place priority to the control use of loyalty, for ill use of loyalty renders some bad accidents or even catastrophes. Thus the loyalty itself should not be blamed, we should think twice about the proper guidance of loyalty. |
