Humankind is always pursuing values, which represent the good qualities and moral standards accepted by a community. Art, as well as other representations, are mirrors of these values, but it does not only reflect but also promote and create values. The various forms of art works provide carriers of thoughts and emotions generated by limitless human intellegence, especially the artists’.

The artist is the creator of art works who blend his feelings and ideas into the productions
and communicate with the viewers. While creating the works, values are combined with them intentionally or unintentionally. The appreciation of arts is a process of communication by which the artists transmit these values to the spectators. Then the values are disseminated to the public and possibly preserved by the whole society, thus creating social values by spreading the idea of an artist to a wide range of people.
The vitality of creating new values lies in the inspiration of the artists who does not totally conform to the conventions which are accustomed to common people but often out-dated and flawed. These artists are keen to these defects and sensitive to the new ideas and discoveries. They try to modify and rebuild these conventions by projecting them into the world of imagination, therefore the art works are born by and for the imperfection of present conditions, including values of the society.

The artists are more likely to create new values than the critics because of the following reasons. The critic is always bound to the artworks, so his vision are limited by the works he comments on, whereas the artist is a more independent thinker who creates his own world. Moreover, the critic is easily affected by the public opinion because his comments must be understood and accepted by the public, while the artist often overlooks his reviewers and insists on his own values. Besides, the critic is limited by his language, but the artist can use more kinds of carriers such as music, painting and sculptures conveying more invisible messages.

However, the critic has his advantages by closeness to the public. Common sense tells us a value’s longevity depends largely on its acceptance by the society—the public, and critics are just the bridges connecting artists and common people who may not have good perception to understand the connotation in the works. So the critics can influence the public by appraising the art works and select the “good” works to promote their values, thus these values become known to more people and possible to last for longer time. In short, the lasting existence of values attribute to the critics to some extent.

But the critics are also more likely to be restricted by conventions thus omitting some great artworks which possess values ahead of their times. The critics are vital to the preservation and promotion of values, but they sometimes misused their ability to prevent new values from developing. What’s more, though the critics also creates values by mingling his own ideas with the work while interpreting the artist’s work, these values are less original due to its close relationship with public opinion. They are more likely to be abandoned in the future than the original values, in the case that the original values overcome the initial difficulties.


In conclusion, the artists create more values than the critics, but the critics play an important role in the spreading process of values. So, the lasting values of society should firstly attribute to the original works of artists, then the efforts of critics. It is the combination of the two gives the values to the society and makes our values developing over time in the endless chasing of beauty, justice and freedom.
