哎呀 今儿个又没有按时完成。。。

TOPIC: ISSUE50 - "In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach."
WORDS: 456          TIME: 00:48:00          DATE: 2010-7-26 18:45:50
While I do agree that teachers in the ivory tower shall bring more fresh air from the booming society, I think we do not need to intrude into the sacred research life of some professors and require everyone to plunge into the outside society.
First of all, I hold strong belief in integrated education in educational institutes, and it is very useful for teachers to experience a larger world outside their specialty in order to avoid tramping their students into tiny corners of one discipline. Integrated education is especially important in high schools and in the first undergraduate years, because students at this stage are like pure blank sheets of paper--teachers need to cultivate their interests with interesting real-life aspects of the discipline, and also help them to gain some rough idea about their future career path, telling them how the discipline is influencing the society.  A report from American News and World Report shows that millions of college students in America choose to change their major in their first or second college year, thanks to the opportunities that the college faculties provide them to experience not only how the discipline looks like academically, but how it interacts with the society. On the contrary, in some east Asian countries, e.g. China, where the exam-oriented education pays little attention to anything non-academic, many students have unfortunately chosen the "wrong" area of study which may haunt them all their life.
Nevertheless, I do not quite agree with the statement to make the advisory policy into a blind requirement. Educators, especially faculty staff of universities, must preserve the freedom to decide to what extend shall they devote their precious research time to non-academic pragmatic ends. The great German educator and scientist, Alexander Von Humboldt, established in German universities the atmosphere of "academic freedom", which got spread to and respected by universities across the world. The key concept is that, it is most beneficial for our society to have university staff of a great variety. In other words, we cannot blame those professors who sacrifice all their energy for the advancement of scientific research. Actually, it is a waste of time and a great insult for them if they are forced to temporarily get away from their research. Anyway, why do we have to make the stupid requirement if there is always someone else willing and better prepared to bring the outside world to the students?
Therefore, a better solution to get the students in contact with the society is to encourage more faculty to broaden their horizon beyond their own academic specialty, while at same time academic freedom gets fully respected in that teachers from a larger variety come to students to show them different colorful aspects of the discipline.

While I do agree that teachers in the ivory tower shall bring more fresh air from the booming society [the teacher should leaving the ivory tower behind], I think we do not need to intrude into[这个是闯入或插手,用在这里不太合适吧] the sacred research life of some professors and require everyone to plunge into [卷入?投入?总感觉词组用的有点大,个人感觉啊]the outside society.
First of all, I hold strong belief in integrated education in educational[同时出现两个education系列,改一个为teaching也可以] institutes, and it is very[建议改成certainly,感觉very不是很地道] useful for teachers to experience a larger world outside[这句不对a big world out就可以了(在句酷上查的)] their specialty in order to avoid tramping their students into tiny corners of one discipline. Integrated education is especially important in high schools and in the first undergraduate years[important to the undergraduate first-year students(因为前面的用法不符合英美习惯)], because students at this stage are like pure blank sheets of paper[(英美好像没有这种比喻,我在google上没看见)they are like innocent boy]--teachers need to cultivate their interests with interesting [同理于前面的educating~同词根的别出现在一起改为fascinating]real-life aspects of the discipline, and also help them to gain some rough idea about their future career path, telling them how the discipline is influencing the society.  A report from American News and World Report shows that millions of college students in America choose to change their major in their first or second college year, thanks to the opportunities that the college faculties provide them to experience[这个词用得太多了,建议换个] not only how the discipline looks like academically, but how it interacts with the society. On the contrary, in some east Asian countries, e.g. China, where the exam-oriented education pays little attention to anything non-academic, many students have unfortunately chosen the "wrong" area of study which may haunt them all their life[lives].
Nevertheless, I do not quite agree with the statement to make the advisory policy into a blind requirement[是想说盲目的需求么?没有这种用法]. In other words, we cannot blame those professors who sacrifice all their energy [用法不对,spare no effort]for the advancement of scientific research. Actually, it is a waste of time and a great insult for them if they are forced to temporarily get away from their research. Anyway, why do we have to make the stupid [?]requirement if there is always someone else willing and better prepared to bring the outside world [跟前面重复了,]to the students?
Therefore, a better solution to get the students in contact with the society is to encourage more faculty[faculties] to broaden their horizon[后面的成分重复,可以去掉] beyond their own academic specialty, while at [the]same time academic freedom gets fully respected in that teachers from a larger variety come to students to show them different colorful aspects of the discipline.
