91. Universities should require every student to take a variety of courses outside the student's field of study because acquiring knowledge of various academic disciplines is the best way to become truly educated.
The author claimed that the university should require every student to
take a variety of courses outside the student’s field of study based on the reason that various academic disciplines is good to true education. I concede that in some level the authors point about the taking different courses are good. Beyond this concession, however, the author’s intention to make it into rules, are not so wise choice, considering about the feasibility and reality.
In the science and technology area, I would agree with the author because one of the most important features of modern science and technology is interdisciplinary. Like nanotechnology are quintessence of physics and chemistry. Taking different courses, like basic chemistry elements properties and experimental methods, will offer the physics majoring students lots of vantages. E.g. Madam Curie, who won the Nobel Prize twice, one is in physics, and the other is the famous physicist, who also profession in chemistry. She understands physics well which makes her knew there maybe some new element possibly exists in asphalt, and she knows chemistry, which offers her method to find them.
In arts realm, similar things are also going on, even more cogent. Taking linguistics for example, Language can never develop alone without culture, which is also influenced by politic and economy. English has so many intercrosses with Latin and French, 70% of Korean comes from Chinese. Obviously taking classes about foreign civilization would help those students majoring in their narrow field of some pure kink language. One truth is that most linguists are bilingual or polyglot.
Taking another perspective, however, making politics are not so simple. The author’s good wishes may be probably counterproductive. We always know that taking different courses will intrigue a serious problem need to be overcome which is limited time and vigor. People do not have interminable time to devote to everything. Taking too much non relevant classes will only distract the students, leading to confuse and superficial. Madam Curie actually won two fields of Nobel Prize, yet we need to understand that during her era, physics and chemistry has no chasm like they do nowadays. With the science and technology developing, the fissure between different disciplines expands. Not mention that between different disciplines, even inside a same academic field, like physics, condensed physics and high energy physics nearly share little common. They do not even share the calculating methods. So it is not reality to study variety of courses outside your field, in one’s time-confined life.
Still, considering the feasibility, most universities would simply ask students to take outside-department courses, which probably induce students to choose those courses which will lead to higher grades while taking less time, not mention that they will consider the meaning of these chosen courses. In this background, except the waste of time to take a meaningless class, is there any goodness to the students? How can we say that the rules are truly education?
In conclusion, we may say that in some specific environment and instruction, learning different courses besides major is helpful to students, in another way, however, making this thought into real prescriptions, are not so wise choice anymore.
