TOPIC: ISSUE1 - "We can usually learn much more from people whose views we share than from people whose views contradict our own; disagreement can cause stress and inhibit learning."
WORDS: 673 TIME: 01:35:17 DATE: 2010/7/29 22:05:43
A phenomenon which could usually be noticed in our daily routine is that we feel we are more ept to learn from people who hold the commonground with us than those who persist heterodox views. This could easily be explained by some simple phycological theories, for stress and fear could be ironized in a contradicting situation, and superficial leaning may cease. But I also hold the view that disagreement will not obstrude learning, on the contrary, it will only promote learning.
It often comes to our experience that we are more ready to tell our ideas in an agreeing environment. For agreeing may lead to agreeable feeling, and agreeable makes us feel that we could express our ideas more freely without fearing of being joked or involved in an endless debate. That's the inner charateristic of humanity, and we each human menber shares that. Just as an famous saying tells "birds with the same feather gather". On the other hand, when we are accompanied with people who maintain opposite views, we may feel unrelaxed, for cognistic disagreement may usually lead to oral arguement, and oral arguement would often develop into physical conflict. Since most people did not like being involved into a conflict with an unfamilar person for an unrelevant topic, few people would choose to show their idea once they sensed the hostility in the circumstance.
In the meanwhile, disagreement is important for our learning. It would promote our learning rather than demote it. One thing that has come to our common acknowledgement is that communication is disired in our work. Without communication we would be focused in a narrow field with limited knowledge. If all human beings in the world hold the same gound, their is no need to communicate, for communication would not bring upon new ideas in this situation. Once their is disagreement, there is a good desire for communication, and there is a good chance for us to learn more. Disagreement means that we could change ideas with others, we can discuss problems. Great ideas spike out in the process of communication and problems are solved through dicussion. One philosopher says that, if we have two apples, there are still two apples after exchange, but if we have two ideas, we could possess more knowledge after exchange, for ideas can born ideas.
Disagreement may lead to unpleasing communication, unpleasing communication still provides us much knowledge to learn. In this condition, we at least have known that there are different opinions on the earth, and how the different voices may sound like. From an objective perspective, the labor division in today's working field have called for colaberate, and colaberate asks for effective communication, there will be disagreement since the world is more and more multi-polorized. disagreement occurs in our communication will enrich our knowledge, activate our mind, and finally provide us a better solution to problems and wider horizon to the world. History of science development also prove it to us that great theories came from the discussion between scientist who hold different ideas. One famous instance is the historical debate between Newton and Huygeins over the substance of solar. They are both great scientists, one holding solar being wave while the other particle, what a contradicting disagreement occurs. A heat dicussion took place between them, and finally theory was reached that solar takes the characteristics of both wave and particle, so it is wave and particle at the same time. In the history of science development, the contribution of discussion caused by disagreement could not be neglected.
In conclusion, we may feel more freely to express our ideas in an environment where our ideas is welcomed. However this expression would only enhance our belief in our former knowledge other than bring us new thoughts. Disagreement, on the contrary, may make us feel nervous but it is the very time when creative ideas are born. So I hold the view that disagreement would not inhibit learing, in contrast, it will call for discussion, which could bring us more knowledge. |
