TOPIC: ISSUE130 - "How children are socialized today determines the destiny of society. Unfortunately, we have not yet learned how to raise children who can help bring about a better society."

The statement is built up with two assertions: first, the socialization of children today determines the destiny of society; second, we don't know how to education our children to bring a better society. While I concede that socialization of children is vital to the future of society, I disagree with the point that it determines the future of society. As to the second one, my opinion is we do know how to educate our children for a better society and history has witnessed great progress from generation to generation.

How our children are socialized is very important to society. How children are socialized determined their attitude from normal options such as attire, food to big decisions such as politics, religious. For example muslin women dress black robe and get their face veiled with only a slip for eyes, some religious don't eat port; as to opinion on big issues, the socialization of children determines their attitude about evolution, about whether human should be cloned; about their economic decisions, such as the habit of saving money or borrowing money from the bank first then pay it back later; about the attitude towards financial risk, is it banks to blame or is it a normal part of economic development? All these decisions of eating, dressing, economic decision, and personal religious help built up the shape of the society. So how children are socialized is very important in determining the future of a society.

However, my agreement on the importance of children socialization does not go to the extent that it determined the destiny of a society. Technology and management are also very important in determining the state of a society. The second industry revolution greatly changed our way of life dramatically, women were liberated from everyday chores to work in society; the discovery of electrical light bright dark nights. And more recently, the invention of computer makes enormous information accessible, changing our way of working. The development of rapid vehicles shortened the distance between cities. So it is undeniable that technology help determine the way a society operates. And also management, from big as the governance of a country to small as the planning of a family, management determine the efficiency of resources. For instance the society pattern of china is different from American. China is under the management of communist party, American has two main political parties, the difference of political management result in fundamentally differences in policy making, in problem solving and so on.

As to the second part of the statement, I believe we know how to educate our children to make a better society. My opinion can be proved by the progress made from generation to generation. Morally children are instilled with the concepts of rightness, open-minded, generous, bravely; they are taught of analytical skills in solving problems, they are taught of comprehensive abilities to spot the problems, they are taught of how to use tools to help them, and most of all they are taught to be themselves, chose their way of life, of happiness and by all this they know how to make a better life for themselves, and if they are living better, how can the society be degraded? Technically, new generation are equipped with the most advance technologies for their work, and they are always the most energetic ones, ones that bear the most innovation minds, ones who are the fastest in accepting new things, does all these help in bring a better society? So the claim that we don’t know how to teach our children to bring about a better society is ungrounded.


To sum up, socialization and others factors such as technology and management skills help determine the future of a society, and parents and teachers, be aware of these important factors , do know how to teach the next generation to bring a better society for them.
