TOPIC: ISSUE136 - "The absence of choice is a circumstance that is very, very rare."
WORDS: 487

Is the absence of choice very, very rare? In my point of view, I totally agree with the speaker. In some cases, we have to admit what is called destiny. Yet in most circumstances, the choices are really abundant for us to choose from. Three examples that aptly illustrate this point involve the fields of nature, society and history and one's own life as follows.

First and foremost, in the realm of nature, the development of nature itself is filled with choices. To illustrate this point clearly, here's an example that is very persuasive. Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection tells us that nature is constantly choosing species that can adapt to the current environment. And each species confronted with change of nature is offered three choices: to alter, to move, or to die. With the change of nature, new species occur and new choices come into being. We cannot deny that nature's way is presented with choices.

When it comes to the realm of society and history, which involve the domain of politics, culture, technology, education and so on, the condition is similar. From the perspective of politics, there are democratic laws governing we have the right to choose within the range of law. As for the moral and ethics, since homosexual is recognized by the society, in this diversified society, how could it come that we have no choice? The same goes for education. On attending universities, one can choose major according to one's interests and hobbies, or even switch their major when they find the major is not to their tastes.

In one's life, we are confronted with diverse choices in the same way. We are making important or trivial choices all the time. In one day, we choose when to get up, how to get to school, what to eat for lunch, and which book to buy. A white collar who complains that every day is boring may go out to breathe fresh air and enjoy the sunshine, or he or she can choose to alter the present job. But he has to bear the predicted result that the salary of the new position may not equal to that of the original one. In this condition, he can consider moving to a smaller house, purchasing ordinary clothes instead of luxury ones, commute to work instead of driving, and so forth. Common sense has told us that we are born with the right to choose. Aside from those who are in jail or psychiatrically ill, normal people have freedom to choose what they like in most conditions.

Although there are some disasters that we may not be able flee from, like earthquakes and tsunamis, in which thousands of people die, the world is abundant with choices in most cases. Simply put, in this age of rapid change and challenges, there are so many opportunities that seldom are we in a circumstance where choices are absent.
