In this era, rapid social and technological changes bring about many luxuries and conveniences in the society where we all live in. However, with the help and comfort provided by these luxuries and conveniences, we actually do not need to have a strong body, good eyesight or other capabilities. In this way, I strongly agree with the speaker's claim that although many people think that the luxuries and conveniences in modern society are totally harmless, in fact, they indeed hinder people developing into truly strong and independent individuals. Further, I think the reasons should be divided into the physical respect and the spiritual respect.

In the first place, our physical development is affected by the luxuries and conveniences. With the development in the field of economy, science and technology, the hi-tech inventions flood our lives. Vehicles, planes and other facilities help us to do almost everything in our lives. For example, modern Chinese children especially those who live in large cities like Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou are getting used to take cars wherever they want to go. Unfortunately, these children's parents apparently meet this requirement frequently. The terrible aftermath is, according to the study conducted by an authority recently, the average of children's health condition has decreased dramatically than before. In this case, the luxuries and conveniences indeed block the children and their parents from placing enough emphasis on individual's fitness.

Likewise, the luxuries and conveniences of contemporary life prevent our spiritual development as well. Consider, owning cell phones in our pockets, we rarely memorize the numbers of our friends, co-workers and families, because we do not have to. We can use our cell phones to record not only the numerous numbers but also the important messages, dates and other things. In this case, there is no doubt, our memory are failing. For another thing, the using of computers and internet can also be taken as a double-edged sword. Whenever we have a question or an idea, we no longer think about it by ourselves, and to search the internet becomes the first choice. However, we should be aware that it is our thought and imagination contribute to our society and just accept the ideas on the internet will repress our desire to think independently. Therefore, modern luxuries and conveniences are also affecting our imagination.

Nonetheless, some people might argue that with the help of hi-tech equipments, our soldiers are unbeatable on the battlefield. I must concede the meaningful role which was played by these technologies and conveniences, but we should be clear that what is true strong and independence for a soldier? If he will lose the orientation without the help of GPS, if he cannot survive from the depopulated zones without the help of transportation, I venture to say that the man is weak and incompetent. As far as I see it, it is our nature to rely on the conveniences around us, and we consequently lose the ability to solve the question independently.

To sum up, I totally agree with the speaker's claim that although it is accepted by most of people that the luxuries and convenience are harmless, they actually prevent people from developing not only our physical abilities but also our spiritual abilities. In short, they prevent people from developing into truly strong the independent individuals
