TOPIC: ISSUE105 - "The true strength of a country is best demonstrated by the willingness of its government to tolerate challenges from it's own citizens."
WORDS: 311
TIME: 00:45:00
DATE: 2010/8/5 11:15:42

From the ancient society to the modern society, the world has seen human society change. Challenge is the contradiction that the society needs to be changed.

Darwin challenged his country that we were not created by the god, as it was said in the Bible, but was changed from monkeys. The country didn't tolerate his challenge and Darwin suffered a lot from his country. Similarly, Galileo challenged the society that our earth is not the center of the cosmos but the sun. Galileo also suffer a lot from his country.
In Qing Dynasty, ancient China, the emperor even burned all the Confucian books and killed all the people who had read these books which challenged his govern/rule. And Qing Dynasty lasted no more than 100 years.
We see those countries didn't accept anything that challenge their benefits. As a result, they kept their original state and wouldn't make progress.
This is the weakness of a country.

However, to tolerate challenge is not a good attitude. To tolerate is to allow but the country is not agree with it. Countries like that also don't believe their citizens challenges like Darwin and Galileo; as a result, they wouldn't change their original thinking.

A country's real progress is to change itself and suit the new condition.
In the thirties of the twentieth century, the America suffered a great severe financial crisis. Factories were bankrupted and people lost their jobs. The newly elected president Franklin.D.Roosevelt came up with a series of plan policies that America once rejected. The policies changed the U.S.A and helped her go through the crisis.

The existence of challenge reveals the contradiction in the society and it may be what will make a great progress to the society. Toleration cannot make this contradiction disappear. Only countries have taken action to change them can this contradiction be changed into great progress.

This is the true strength of a country.

TOPIC: ARGUMENT200 - Statistics collected from dentists indicate that three times more men than women faint while visiting the dentist. This evidence suggests that men are more likely to be distressed about having dental work done than women are. Thus, dentists who advertise to attract patients should target the male consumer and emphasize both the effectiveness of their anesthetic techniques and the sensitivity of their staff to nervous or suffering patients.

The author's argument is weak though he believes that dentists who advertise to attract patients should pay attention to the male consumer and the sensitivity of their staff to patients. He thinks that men are more likely to be distressed about dental work than women. The author overlooks some serious drawbacks in his argument.

First, targeting only male consumer may lose much profit from female consumer. Women are more concerned about their teeth. They are willing to pay money to keep their teeth clean, white and in a good looking for it will make them more beautiful. But male consumer won't have such concern.
What's more, the author fails to consider the situation of the current consumers of dentists. If male consumers are already enough and even much more than female consumer, it's wise to target female rather male consumer.

Second, the more times men than women faint doesn't indicates that men are more distressed about the dental work. Common sense tells me that women tend to care more about their teeth than men. Hence, women often go to the dentists for cleaning and other repair which won't take much pain; while men tend to be lazy and won't go to the dentists until their teeth are seriously hurt. This different habit and concentration can explain why more men are faint than women.
