Do tradition and modernization are incompatible that people must choose between them? The speaker says so. I agree that, under some circumstances, we should make a choice from tradition and modernization. Otherwise, in my opinion these two are interdependent that we cannot shun one of them unilaterally.
Admittedly, in some conditions tradition and modernization are inconsistent. Generally, ancient traditions in the modern competition will be refreshed. In this process, old convention is often replaced by new things which are more convenient, advanced, and modern. This is really true in technological innovation. Let’s take the evolution process of architecture as an example.In order to survive in a rapidly changing society, human change the living house by revising the material people used in the past, from thatch to stone, then to reinforced concrete. You should make a choice according to your need.
At the same time, however, modernization sometimes departs from tradition, while embracing it in other occasions. After all, as we know, it is impossible to take a significant contribution without first being strongly influenced by past achievements within that field. For supporting examples, the current music, no matter how famous it is, you could find a chapter or even a paragraph that same with the classical music’s forms, rhythmic, and even melodies which is very popular in the past. Not only in music, every area has the same condition, such as the color and skill of painting; the form and
charm of sculpture; the conception and rhyme of poem. All the characteristic that belong to the past, we call it--history which tells groups of people who they are and thus defines their culture. Therefore, update is exactly an elongation and iteration of heritage.
Overall, people in the present share some same features with people who lived at any other time in history. This is same as the architecture. No matter The Eiffel Tower and Arc de triomphe in paris; Leaning Tower of Pisa and the Colosseum in Italy; The Summer Palace and Yuanmingyuan in China which are part of traditional culture, or Guggenheim Museum, the Pompidou Art Centre, the new Louvre Museum, whose represent the modern civilization, all of these have its own value to every people both in the past and nowadays. Each of these buildings have something in common which is modernization’s part inherited from the traditional, also have their own characteristics that appear with the development of culture. Thus, past is the fundamental of the evolvement of future. Which could we shun, or which could we choose? This is a selection dilemma.
To sum up, I concede that tradition and modernization are incompatible in certain instances. But, from the foregoing discussion, I think, we couldn’t choose one from convention and modernization only for the reason that they sometimes are quite different.

I agree that some professors do need real-world experience which in order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level. Admittedly, however, whether faculty should work outside in professions relevant to the courses they teach, fundamentally depends on the specific academic arear.
Above all, I concede that, for some specific disciplines, professors have real-work experience is an efficient way to raise teaching quality. Generally, as we all know, the subjects as Engineering, Mechanical Mechanics, such practice disciplines, in order to understand the knowledge we learn from the book and then teach others in a comprehensible way, working in this academic arear is the fastest and the most advisable measure. Through this experience, people could penetrate deeply with the knowledge and could know how to make flexible use of it. On the other hand, because of you are the professor of this course, you should know variety information that people do not involve this arear don’t know. And this knowledge in your mind should be professional, meaningful and combined with the fact that could sparking interest, and even motivating some students to pursue the field as a career. Aside from book, where could you get such information? The answer is unique--From working.
At the same time, however, in some arear, practice do not work. You cannot get any efficient achievement to improve the quality of teaching in university level. In fact, in these courses, such as Theoretical physics, mathematics, anthropology, and macroeconomics, it is neither necessary nor possible for researchers to directly apply the knowledge to practice work. Moreover, if only through practice could improve the quality of teaching, the disciplines I mentioned above not to improve the quality, even the normal development will be limited. Let’s take Philosophy as an example. Philosophy, is theoretical and systematic view of the world; is general and summary of natural, social, and cogitation knowledge; is the unity of world outlook and methodology. The best way to understand the ideology of Philosophy--a abstract course deeply is thinking.
Working outside is not the only way that can improve the quality of teaching. Complete teaching equipment, free teaching atmosphere, or even charisma of the professor can influence the quality of education.
As the students learning Computer programming, a good performance computer can make learning process more convenient. Also a complete tool for Engineering students can make them finish the work more efficient. Not only complete teaching equipment, but free teaching atmosphere make contribution to improve the teaching quality. Free atmosphere of Philosophy, anthropology, and Sociology let students have a better understanding of the learning content. Otherwise, I believe that if the professor has a attractive charisma, nobody willing miss his class, then the quality of teaching be improved in an easy way.
In sum, working outside the academic world to have some experience is not the only way to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level. Concrete analysis of concrete, working outside should be required for the subjects which need practice, not for all branch of learning. |
