The speaker claims that we can learn more from people who agree with us than from those disagree with us, for the reason that disagreement may stunt learning. I concede that agreement may boost the efficiency of learning under some circumstances. However, we can learn from each other through debates if we have distinct ideas which can provide new thinking.
To begin with, I admit that learn from the people whose viewpoint we share in common would improve our learning productiveness. We have the similar idea or even we accept the same degree of education which makes our talking atmosphere tuneful. Such as when come across a topic, you are inclined to discuss it with the people who have the uniform points with you instead of the people you cannot communicate at the same level. Let’s bring our discussion here to a more present and practical context, it can be given a concrete example: is it possible for an astronomer to have a discussion with a magus about the topic of the galaxies? Granted that they come across and talk about this question, they would not reap the desired fruit from each other which may in the result of wasting time and vim.
Admittedly, it is inefficient to talk over with the people whose opinions contradict ours. On the one hand, with the distinct standpoint or even the different academic realms, we could not discuss at the identical platform fundamentally. Without the necessary prerequisite, the conversation between us will become meaningless. On the other hand, notwithstanding, we argue in the same realm, in some debates, disagreement often manifests in the insignificant controversy, during which the adversaries are always keen to disseminate their own points of view to compel opponents to accept theirs instead of ignoring the new viewpoints, which finally lose the chance to evolve their obsolete ideas. This kind of debate has become the sheer one rather than the initial purpose that to gain the new concept from divergence. What’s more, the disagreement may exert pressure and impede them saying out their own ideas. In addition, it might be harder or even bitter for someone that cannot tolerant their viewpoints retorted to accept the opposite views.
Nonetheless, we can learn much from the people whose standpoints adverse ours. In company with the people of same thought pattern and thesis, we could step forward but is superficial not essential. Instead, disagreement can offer the fresh blood to our brain, for example, students in different science fields have different analytical methods which can be beneficial to solve diverse problems. Furthermore, disagreement led us to the unknown world with demonstrate experience which can help us think the timeworn ideas in new way. Such as people with the different cultural settings or stand have different ideas to the same thing and in which people can obtain more and learn diverse kinds of culture that can prolong horizon. History is replete with ample evidence to demonstrate this point. A notable case in point refers to America which is the biggest nation of immigration fuses different kinds of culture that to make it possible to pullulate rapidly. It is advisable to pardon disparate blushes which can provide fresh standpoint to keep progressing.
In sum, the same views reveal the importance and the core of our work and their positive suggestions could provide us a more insightful understanding of the topic and more thoughts for further work. However, all the help described above can only promise our success in completeness of our own ideas about the topic. Breakthrough will be hardly achieved because it requires a distinct vision never created before to lead people. Without different opinions, it is difficult to jump out from our own myopic thinking. |
