position: although traditional rituals and ceremonies do more than modern tiruals and ceremonies to define a culture due to the deeper cultural accumulation, all of them can grant people a sense of belonging.
1 (记载先祖的思想)(worship deities... what our ancestors place high value on and what the precedents pursue for)
2 (rituals传神地表达belief and sense of belonging)(even after presence of letter.. )
other than attending ..can one really understand
3 In addition, modern rituals and ceremonies also serve to grant us sense of belonging though they might not have such much cultural value as traditional rituals and ceremonies have; after all, the latter has deeper cultural accumulation than the former.
(flag-raising ceremony --belonging country)
3 Similarly, some modern ceremonies also encourage us to work harder by telling them their social position.
rewarding ceremoney -social position
I fundamentally agree with the speaker's claim for the very reason the most rituals and ceremonies are essentially culture in miniature. By attending rituals and ceremonies, we human beings identify who we are and gain and sense of belonging. However, although some modern ceremonies have less cultural value than traditional rituals and ceremonies, they also have similar function as traditional ones.
Admittedly, rituals and ceremonies are born to epitomize and define a culture. The earliest rituals were designed to worship the deities or idols since our ancestors have little knowledge about the nature. They can hardly establish a relationship between two seemingly irrelevant events. Why the crops thrive after a strong rain? Who decide the weather? In the awe of nature, they sacrifice animals and ask augur to ensure a good harvest or to pray for good luck. From these ancient rituals, we can know the origin of our culture. That is to say, what our ancestor place high value on and what the precedents pursue for.
Further, even after the presence of letter, rituals and ceremonies have been always characterized as an important means of manifesting the common belief or ideologies among the society. Those activities involved in the rituals and ceremonies definitely provide a more vivid picture of the belief the culture treasure to people than those written records. Understandably, other than attending traditional rituals and ceremonies can a people really understand the intricate belief handed down from generation to generation. Only be reading written records, one can hardly got the connotation of Thanks Giving day. By eating the delicious turkey and pumpkin pie baked by mum, young people gradually start to feel the meaning of family as well as the importance of giving thanks to those helpers.
In addition, modern rituals and ceremonies also serve to grant us sense of belonging though they might not have such much cultural value as traditional rituals and ceremonies have; after all, the latter has deeper cultural accmulation than the former. For example, we all feel the majesty and greatness of our country by attending the raise-flag ceremony which greatly enhances the coherence of a country. The raising flag along with the national anthem endow us with brave and passion. And the symbolic values of such ceremony have great impact on students studying aboard. The raise-flag ceremony will arouse their sense of belonging immediately even though the ceremony is not conducted in their motherland and the flag is not the one they are familiar with.
Similarly, some modern ceremonies also encourage us to work harder by telling them their social position. Since social position is an invisible notion and it can only be visualized by such ceremonies. One example aptly illustrates this point involved the various rewarding ceremonies. Rewarding ceremonies such as Oscar and Nobel serves to praise and honor those people who had eminent achievement in the year before the rewarding ceremony. Every candidates of the rewarding actually come to know their position in the industry from the rewarding list. Likewise, the rewarding ceremonies of a company also grant the sense of competition to employee as well as remind them what position they are in. By realizing one's position, positive person tend to work harder to gain a better position in the next ceremony.
As shown above, traditional rituals and ceremonies generally have more cultural value than modern rituals and ceremonies. Nevertheless, we can get sense of belonging from both of them.
