Thesis
As the author claims, no approaches are more effective than analyzing the young currents of our society so as to obtain a thorough knowledge of modern culture. I agree with this assertion insofar as the younger generation, standing for the opportunity, hope and future, is a necessity for us to comprehend. Otherwise, in my view, the statement fails to account for the significance of the adults and the senior in the culture part of our world.
Argument 1
Necessarily through analyzing the trends of its youth, the most pioneering power of human society, can one deeply understand contemporary culture. After all, the youngsters, to whom the future belongs, are playing so essential a role in society that they represent the leading voices against the conventional thoughts. To demonstrate this viewpoint, here’s a particularly compelling instance. As the Internet has been mushrooming at an unbelievable rate since the 1980s, E-chatting, an emerging form of interpersonal communication, which is not only free of charge but also without restriction of region or nationality, has received a huge popularity among the young, especially adolescent boys and girls. It allows people to meet friends through sharing their own anecdotes and commenting on anything they think of, requiring no face-to-face conversations. The attractiveness of online chatting, struggling against those traditional modes of communication, undoubtedly illustrates the spirit of curiosity and creativity necessarily resulted from a rapid tempo of modern society and an inevitable trend of globalization, which is convinced to make a profound influence on the future pattern of communication and style of life.
Argument 2
Nevertheless, focusing merely on the youth is, when speaking of grasping the modern currents of culture, to some extent, insufficient and incomprehensive, since the young generation cannot wholly stand for contemporary society as a matter of culture. Education is a case in point: the major participants as the youngsters are, they are by no means the main force of educational activities, but only those learning from their teachers and professors, who are much elder than them and actually set the original tones, develop the basic theories and form the academic spirits of education. In other words, the young people, in a sense, are relatively passive receivers, not the major active providers. This case, emphasizing the decisive role of adults and the senior in education, is certain to indicate that it is far from an overall consideration to understand contemporary culture simply by paying too much attention on its youth.
Argument 3
Meanwhile, adults and the senior people, which is also an indispensible part of society, is a must for us to consider when referring to understanding the contemporary culture: as the most important component and the most experienced workforces, adults and the senior, rather than juveniles, maintain the orthodox customs and lead the mainstream value system which is generally accepted by the majority. There are many strong examples to illustrate this point. Laws, the dominating rules of the whole human community, are made by legislators, who must be sophisticated adults, not youngsters; religion, the determinative power of human’s spiritual world, is always considered as a creation of reverent and faithful adults as well. As for the young, their unsophisticated cognition of laws and justice is no more mature than the poor knowledge of religion and belief of those adolescences. All these cases, pointing out who is administering our cultural life, evidently show that it is adults and the senior that are in charge of society, especially the aspect of culture, and illustrate that adults and the senior represent the major perspective of contemporary culture.
Collusion
In sum, I concede that the attention paid to the youth, without whom the modern culture would have been less colorful and meaingful, is needed. Yet, it is the adults and the senior, who make a contribution to cultivating our world in the aspect of culture, that should cause as much concern as the younger generation likewise. |
