72, In measuring electrical activity in different parts of the brain, researchers found that people who describe themselves as generally happy have more activity in the left prefrontal lobe of their brains than do other people. Therefore, a medication for stimulating the left prefrontal lobe of the brain would be an effective treatment for clinical depression.

The author claims that people who are happier have more activity in the left prefrontal lobe of their brains than other people via a research based on researchers’ describe. Therefore the arguer advises a medication for stimulating the left prefrontal lobe of the brain would be an effective treatment for clinical depression. However, the author’s argument is problematic in several critical respects.
To begin with, the author provides no evidence that the research’s result is statistically reliable. In order to establish a strong correlation between happiness and the activity in the prefrontal lobe of the brain, the research’s sample must be sufficient in size and respective of the allover population. Moreover the measure that how research is conducted is unscientific, since people themselves can not clearly judge the happiness level, plus we can not rule out the possibility that the unhappy one made a lie. Lacking evidence to support the research is both professional and truly, the author can not confidently conclude that the result is reliable.
Also questionable is the author dose not proves all the other factors of the researchers have remained all the same. The author overlooks many other possible explanations could take responsibility for the activity in the left prefrontal lobe of the brain. Perhaps those who easier to go to angry or anxiety have more odds to cause the activity, or just the diverse of heights, weights or races is the deriving of the different activity level. In short, without ruling out all the other possible factors, the research’s verdict is wholly unconvincing.
In addition, the author insists that happiness is responsible for the activity, however, the sequence of these events, in itself, dose not suffice to prove that the former caused the later one, perhaps it is the left prefrontal lobe of brain’s activity lead to the happiness. Therefore, the author can not establish a cause-and-effect relationship justifiably upon the research.
The final problem involve the author’s argument is that defining the clinical depression faintly. If by “clinical depression” that simply means do not happy or happiness, then the claim would have merit; otherwise, it would not, perhaps the clinical depression have no relationship to whether happy or not. Absent a clear definition of the term or clear evidence that clinical depression is lack of happiness, the author’s contention that a medication for stimulating the left prefrontal lobe of the brain would be an effective treatment for clinical depression is simply unjustified.
In summary, the author’s argument cites the research loosely, and unreasonably makes the cause-and-effect relationship between happiness and activity in the left prefrontal lobe of the brains. Moreover, it can not convince me because of the vague definition of clinical depression, thus the assumption that a medication for stimulating the left prefrontal lobe of the brain would be an effective treatment is unjustified. To better convince me, the author must redo the research more truly and reliable, ruling out the other possible factors might influence the activity. Last but not least, the author must define the clinical depression clearly hence the statement a medication for stimulating the left prefrontal lobe of the brain would be an effective is credible. |
