TOPIC: ISSUE1 - "We can usually learn much more from people whose views we share than from people whose views contradict our own; disagreement can cause stress and inhibit learning."

The speaker claims that we can usually learn much more from people whose views we share. As far as I'm concerned, I have a different idea. I think we can lean much from people whose views contradict our owns as well.
There's no doubt that, people are more willing to talk to others who share the same opinions. Talking with a person who has the same opinion is a pleasant thing. We can talk about our understands and share experience. The environment will be easy and there's less dispute or even no dispute. A person can better explain his or her views, and people can exchange ideas and communicate happily. In this easy and happy atmosphere, people are more ready to listen to others rather than defense their own views. As a result, people may learn from others, learn more useful things. We can take Marks and Engers as an example. Both of them have the same view about the development of the society. They shared the same ideas and became very good friends. They worked together and during the work, learned from each other. Even after Marks died, it's Engers who finished Marks's works. The two people's work is very important to us now.
But, even we learn from people whose views we share, it's unfairly to assume that we cannot learn from people whose views contradict our own. We all know that no one is perfect, and there is no absolutely right views and wrong views. Everyone has his or her own view even on the same topic. It depends on their different living environment and experience. Talking with people who have different views is a good chance for us to try to know about what others think. During the process, we can find the shortcomings and improve our own view. For example, China and America are two different countries. They have different policies, economies, laws and so on. People from these two countries have different valus and ideas. But, nowadays, there are more and more exchanges between these two countries. Not only the president Obama came to China, chairman Hu went to Ameirca, but there are more and more communication between the people. We all can learn from each other.
It's true that, disagreement can cause stress sometimes. What's more important is that we should have the tolerance of different people and different views.
To sum up, I think that we can learn from people whose views we share as much as from people whose views contradict our own. We can not hastily say that which one is more important. what we need to do is to communicate with others and try to learn from others.
TOPIC: ARGUMENT95 - The following appeared in a memo from a budget planner in Sophia County.
"Census data indicate that the number of retired couples without children who are moving into Sophia County is steadily rising; private schools in our county report substantial increases in enrollment; and a statewide survey of parents shows that over 10 percent now support the idea of home schooling instead of public schooling funded by the county government. Such demographic trends suggest that our county will not have to construct new school buildings and that we can therefore decrease the budget for county-funded public schools."

In this argument, the arguer concludes that Sophia County will not have to construct new school buildings and that can therefore decrease the budget for county-funded public school. To support the conclusion, the arguer points out that census data indicate that the number of moving-in retired couples without children is steady rising; while private schools report increases in enrollment. In addition, the arguer reasons that a statewide survey shows that over 10 percent support home schooling. This argument suffers from several critical fallacies.
In the first place, the census data fails to inform us the number of couples with children who are moving into Sophia County. The rising number of retailed couples without children can not indicate whether the number of retailed couples with children. It is likely that, the total number of retired couples who are moving into Sophia County is rising, and the number of couples with children is rising too.
In the second place, the result of the statewide survey may not indicate the situation in Sophia County. Maybe parents in Sophia County prefer sending their children to public school. What's more, Cranted that the result of the statewide survey can be used for Sophia County, the arguer fails to inform
us about the base amount of the survey. And 10 percent is not the majority. We do not know the opinions of the other 90 percent of parents. It is likely that, there are more parents support the idea of public schooling funded by the county government.
Last but not the least, the demographic trends does not suggest that the county needs no more school buildings. And we do not know the situation of the county-funded schools now. Maybe there is a shortage of buildings.
In sum up, the argument is not persuasive as it stands. To futher support the argument, the arguer would have to provide more evidence to show that there are less children will go to the county-funded public schoiols. To evaluates the argument, we need more detailed information about the census data and the statewide suevey. |
