Issue 028

I strongly agree with the author's statement that it is obviously necessary for the students to learn the ideas, trends and concepts which are more important than the only facts. The earth we living is a seamless web of natural and anthropic forces, which interact in the methods that we can hardly make our life better only knowing the facts of the physical and social phenomenon. Several reasons that aptly illustrate this point will be delivered below.

One reason for my fundamental agreement with the speaker is that the problem that we faced in the future is under changing circumstances which can hardly be handled down by only knowing the facts. The final and ultimate objective of education is not to know what it is but to sharpen critical thinking skills -- to be able to analyze facts and to make reasonable solutions. For example, we might know a lot of facts about natural disaster such as earthquake and tornado, but in fact we can do nothing to avoid it by only detailed deprivation. Instead, mere through the method of observing the evidences and examining the causes can the expertise predict it to reduce the damage. Consequently, students should not squander a lot of time to learn the things which may not be so important comparatively.  

Another reason why I essentially agree with the speaker is that it is quite easy for the students to forget the facts without the help of ideas, trends, and concepts that help explain those facts. According to a survey taken by Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, averagely, only 17% of students which offer them only the details deprivation of facts can exactly remember the knowledge after one month, while 89% of students can repeat the knowledge point accurately which are informed not only the facts but also the background, causes and meanings. The result of the study is widely available especially when being applied in the fields of history and science studying. To strengthen the quality of education, the teachers should supply them with facts as well as ideas, trends and concepts.

Admittedly, under some situations, learning the facts can be necessary and effective. Some subjects, such as biologic and history require the students the accurately detailed facts. For instance, one of the most important job of the historian is to use the abundant language to represent the situation of the age involving all the aspects of the society he studied. Similarity, the biologists conduct a host of experiments to obtain the detailed deprivation of the facts which weigh significantly important in the biological study. Moreover, the students can easily and readily accept the knowledge by cognizing the facts because of the common sense the facts always seem more interesting and absorbing than the concepts, trends and ideas which are boring towards a majority of students.

From what has been discussed above, we can doubtlessly see that even though the dilemma still exists, it is not difficult to draw the conclusions that the students should memorize facts only after they have studied the ideas, trends, and concepts that help explain those facts and that students who have learned only facts have learned little.
