In the lecture, the professor lists three potent points opposite to the reading's statement. As the reading says, great houses in Chaco Canyon, New Mexico own three possible and competing functions, including resident house, food store and special ceremonial center, while the professor uses several evidences casting doubt on all of them.
Initially, the professor suspects that the Chaco structures were used to live hundreds of people per unit. Although they are similar to the well-known apartment building at Taos, New Mexico, purely residential nowadays, the two types of structures are just alike outside. Staying inside, you will find they are quite different. What's more, with numerous residents, there should be a lot of kitchens correspondingly in Chaco structure. However, every Chaco structure has few kitchens, able to support only ten persons at most.
Another point the professor claims, on the contrary of the reading's second theory, is excavation from archeologists. According to the reading, potentially Chaco structures were regarded as food store, especially for grain maize which can be long-lasting. In that case, the remains of maize or maize container should absolutely be found, but there isn't any such discovery. That differs from the reading.
Furthermore, the reading concludes that perhaps these ancient structures are centers holding inhabitants' ceremonial, such as Pueblo Alto, where large number of broken pots and an enormous mound were identified and thought to proof this conclusion. On contrary, the professor believes the unusual mound has nothing to do with ceremonials since they could be held in other place, as well as the broken pots, in regular use instead of festive meals in ceremonial. This directly contradicts what the reading passage indicates. |
