The following was written as a part of an application for a small business loan by a group of developers in the city of Monroe.
'A jazz music club in Monroe would be a tremendously profitable enterprise. Currently, the nearest jazz club is 65 miles away; thus, our proposed club, the C Note, would have the local market all to itself. Plus, jazz is extremely popular in Monroe: over 100,000 people attended Monroe's jazz festival last summer, several well-known jazz musicians live in Monroe, and the highest-rated radio program in Monroe is 'Jazz Nightly,' which airs every weeknight. Finally, a nationwide study indicates that the typical jazz fan spends close to $1,000 per year on jazz entertainment. It is clear that the C Note cannot help but make money.

The developers written that the C note would undoubtedly make well profits. To support the claim the developers present 3 facts. First, there is no jazz club in the city at present; Second jazz is popular in Monroe; Third the average money spent on jazz entertainment is considerable high. Close scrutiny of each of these facts, however, reveals that none of them lend credible support to the claim.

First, the lack of local jazz club can not prove that the C note would gain profits in Monroe. It is possible that people like driving to jazz club 65 miles away because it has famous players. Besides, the fact that Monroe still has no jazz club, this may suggest the problem of founding a club in Monroe, because maybe this town has some social question against jass club developing. Without ruling out this possibility these developers can not persuade banker to send load for them.


Second, it is entirely possible that, in reality, jazz music is not popular in Monroe. The attendants of the jazz festival may come from other places, and the popularity of the jazz radio program may be due to the market promoting of this programs rather than the spontaneous appreciation of the jazz music. Without ruling out these possible explanations the developers can not convince me that the jazz music is popular in Monroe.

Third, the developers assume that the local people in Monroe will spend same money on the jazz entertainment like other place in this nation. The situation in the nationwide may be different from situation in Monroe. It is possible that people in Monroe do not spend such amount of money on jazz. Even if the individual of Monroe will spend $1,000 per year on jazz , whether club C note in Monroe will earn enough profits from jazz fans is unsure. Until a survey on problems above is conducted the facts listed by developers will be considered by bankers.

Last but not least, even if jazz market would achieve enough profits, the C note might not run well in Monroe. The developers do not consider the business position of C note in this market. If C note just play jazz show not consider selling jazz disks, metal fabrication and other accessories. C note will lost most costumers who love jazz products collect, and C note will earn little than the developers assumed. Without consideration of these possible situations, the developers can not convince bankers that to approve load to the C note program.
