:victory: Argument44:The following is a recommendation from the business manager of Monarch Books.
"Monarch Books should open a café in its store to attract more customers and better compete with Regal Books, which recently opened a café. Monarch, which has been in business at the same location for more than twenty years, has a large customer following because it is known for its wide selection of books on all subjects. Opening the café would clearly attract more customers. The café would require relatively little space. Space could be made for the café by discontinuing the children's book section, which will likely become less popular given that the last national census indicated a significant decline in the percent of the population who are under age ten."
1) the arguer fails to convince us that oenning the cafe would clearly attract more customers. First of all, it’s still unknown that whether the recently opened cafe in Regal Books has attracted more customers or not. Secondly, no evidence has been given to prove that how much attraction a cafe can have to the customers when they choose a book store. Finally, the arguer ignores the possibly negative effect of opening a cafe. More people would probably read books there and don’t want to buy any books. Otherwise, it can cause some trouble that some people would accidently soil the books when they are not careful drinking coffee.
2) Even granted that to open a cafe would attract more customers, it’s still insufficient to assume that they should discontinue children’s book section. First, the arguer downplays the possible negative effect exerted by discontinuing children’s book section. Probably, some of the family like to go to the book store together, if they found they cannot buy children books in Monarch Books, it’s highly likely that they would go to another book store. Secondly, a national census can not show the real percentage of the population of children. Thirdly, the arguer fails to provide evidence to prove that sale percentage of children’s books. It’s likely that the children books bring them a large part of their profits.
1. no evidence shows that a café woule attract more customers to the bookstore.
2. decline in percent of population under age ten does not follow the decrease of absolute number of children.
3. even if the absolute number of children declines, the children's book section may also keep popular. ( families of more than one child may re-use children books, while those of one children may pay more attention to the preliminary education of their children.
