The Plant Ecological Genetics group of the Institute of Integrative Biology (IBZ) (link: http://www.peg.ethz.ch/index_EN) at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich (ETH Zurich, link: http://www.ethz.ch/about/index_EN) is offering to host a Ph.D. student with a scholarship from the China Scholarship Council.

ETH Zurich is one of the leading universities in the world (see Academic Ranking of World Universities 2010: http://www.arwu.org) and located in Zurich, a small but cosmopolitan city in central Switzerland that offers an outstanding quality of life as well as a large and international academic community (including both ETH Zurich and the University of Zurich).

The atmosphere in our group is international with people from around the world working together on projects related to plant evolution, ecology, population and molecular genetics and genomics. We are equipped with excellent laboratories for molecular analyses, climate chambers and greenhouses and have access to the Genetic Diversity Centre (GDC, link: http://www.gdc.ethz.ch), as well as experimental field sites.

We are seeking an outstanding, self-motivated Ph.D student to join our research projects on the genetic basis of adaptation in the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana. Applicants should have a master degree in a relevant major from one of Chinese leading universities and should be fluent in English. A candidate with a scholarship from the China Scholarship Council (Consult with your college staff and see the link: http://www.csc.edu.cn) will be hosted in our institution and receive the support to carry out a Ph.D project. Preference would be given to candidates with a background of molecular genetics OR population genetics.

The successful applicant will be supervised jointly by Dr. Alex Widmer (Full professor) and Dr. Yonghai Luo (Group leader). The research topic is natural variation and the genetic basis underlying adaptive traits in Arabidosis thaliana. A multidisciplinary approach including population and quantitative genetics, molecular biology and ecology will be used to address the scientific questions.
