本人两天之后的GRE, 正在练习中. 刚刚写完了一篇issue, 原封不动的贴上来, 希望能够得到各位的指教,感激不尽.
ISSUE127 - "Facts are stubborn things. They cannot be altered by our wishes, our inclinations, or the dictates of our passions."
Facts, things that we sometimes appreciate from the bottom of our hearts, other times condemn with all the words we could think of. Regardless of what we do and how we wish, however, they remain unaltered. Indeed, what kind of facts are they if they can easily be changed by merely human wills? I strongly support the statement that Facts cannot be altered by our wishes, our inclinations, or the dictates of our passions.
To begin with, the very definition of fact indicates that it cannot be altered by human will: they are defined as pieces of information that can be rigorous proven to be true in some instances or to be existant in other cases and the term "rigorous" implies that their existances are not up to any human inclinations to decide. This is exactly why facts are necessary and appreciated in newspapers and courts, where information and decisions need neither to be creative nor humorous, but objective. People would not want to read a newspaper with artificially made-up news or hear a judgement in the court based on not concrete facts but on the judge's personal opinions, would they? The very existance of the judicial system is based on the assumption that facts will not be changed by human will.
Examples of facts unaltered by human wishes are all around the places; they are especially obvious if one looks back onto the evolution of science. Back in old days all Europeans believed the theory proposed by Ptolemy, which states that Earth is the center of universe and all other celestial bodies revolve around Earth to form our universe. Fitting very well with the Christian story that God created Earth and mankind, this theory was strongly supported by the Church. Afraid that other contradicting theories will offend their previliges, the Christianity Church had done everything they could to silence all opposing voices. The fact that Earth does revolve around the Sun, however, is not changed despite all the efforts from the Church, and Copernicus and Galileo would be the ones to finally come up with a convincing theory showing the entire world that, no matter how much the Church wishes Sun to revolve around Earth, it is a fact that our Earth revolves around the Sun and is nothing more than a normal planet in the solar system.
Another more recent and probably more famous example supporting the given statement is related to the discovery of Quantum Mechanics, a subject in the early twentieth century that attempts to explain microscopic behaviours. When scientists studied deeper into the field and performed more sophisticated experiments, they were surprised to find that the continuous description of matter and motion seem to disappear and be replaced by random probabilities and chances at the atomic level. Some scientists, drawing on experimental results, accpeted this seemingly crazy explanations; others, however, cannot believe that our universe is entirely based on chances despite the fact that all experimental results point in this direction. Albert Einstein, the most famous among the scientists in doubt, used the famous quote "God does not play dice". Einstein's will, however, is not nearly enough to change the fact that, concluding on all test results, Quantum Mechanics is valid and God, despite objections from many people, does seem to play dice.
People encounter facts during every second in their lives. Sometimes they are appreciated; other times they are not so lovely. But no matter what human beings think of them, it is a fact that facts cannot be altered by human wishes or inclinations.
