星期四就考试了。模考了一下成绩不怎样。只有540。贴作文如下,估计在3.5-4分之间。
"Wisdom is rightfully attributed not to people who know what to look for in life but to people who know what to overlook."
With the swift development of technology, what to pursue is a hot topic in people's life. As one of the main pursuit target, being wisdom has been the dream of generations and generations. Admitted that we all know wisdom is very precious and worth of our chase, there are merely people know what is the right attribute of wisdom. Some may say that wisdom should be attributed to the people who know what to look for in life. Some may hold other views ---- knowing what to overlook is more important. However, in my point of view, we should not split the wisdom into two untangled parts. Wisdom is inclusive of both knowing what to look for and what to overlook.
To begin with, there are a vast of treasures we could pursue through our whole life. For example, the truth of life is an vital one, ----- where are we coming from? where is our terminus? what is the mission of our transient life? For some people, they may pursue the knowledges, like science, art and social science, etc. A person who possesses a lot of such knowledge is regarded as a wisdom one usually. People may also pursue their self-interests as the first choices. No matter what the pursuits are, the basic questions that who I am and what my mission is should be the first to solve. As a Christian, I knew this truth when I was revealed by God through Bible. I knew I am a child of God and what I should do is to glory his name. And I believe that those matured Christian and all God's saints are following this way too ---- to glory God. According to this, wisdom is clearly shown. A person who looks for God is a one replete of wisdom. In short, knowing what to look for in life is vital to wisdom and comes always first before you adopting an effective approach. If a man does not his mission in this world, all he has done will be perished forever although he regards himself full of wisdom.
Secondly, once we know what to look for, we should also carefullly design our time. Life on earth is transient. The longevity of different person seems quite different. However, no one can live a life more than 200 years, as far as I know. An old lady told me her 80 years of life is very short. Therefore, admitting we have limited life and we are sure that we don't want to waste any time, an very important decision left before us is what things should we spend our cherished time on. Many pastors spend their whole life on serving God, serving his people. They overlook their own interest but pursue people's benefits. And also a lot of people donate their own properties to others. For me, when I choose to make all my effort to contribute to my career ---- nanoscience, I will cut a lot of playing time. I must make that choice which is the only way to ensure my goal a realized one in future.
In sum, wisdom is not a simple thing as most people think but a life long pursuit. To act as wisdom as we can, we should know what to look for in life firstly, and in the pursuit we should also manage our time wisely and skillfully to overlook some minor things which are less important compared with our long-term goal.
Argument
The following appeared as a letter to the editor of a local newspaper.
"Five years ago, we residents of Morganton voted to keep the publicly owned piece of land known as Scott Woods in a natural, undeveloped state. Our thinking was that, if no shopping centers or houses were built there, Scott Woods would continue to benefit our community as a natural parkland. But now that our town planning committee wants to purchase the land and build a school there, we should reconsider this issue. If the land becomes a school site, no shopping centers or houses can be built there, and substantial acreage would probably be devoted to athletic fields.
In the above argument, the author comes to a recommendation to exploit the current natural parkland ---- Scott Woods and change it into a school site. To justify this recommendation, the author points out that no shopping centers or houses will be built there and substantial acreage would be devoted to athletic fields. The author also claims that there is no other better use of this land since a large majority of children in their community participate in sports. This recommendation looks reasonable, however, a close scrutiny reveals that it is unsound at all.
To begin with, although the author wants to assure us that the parkland could remain as a natural parkland although a shool site is built there, yet he fails to tell us what the size of the school is. Perhaps the blueprint of the proposed school site is close to the area of park, then there will be no natural land left after we construct such a sizable school. Admitted that the school is of a small size, the author could not promise that there would be no vital damage to the natural scene in the park. Common sense tell us that the school will not be singular existing architecture. We need roads constructed to connect it with residental houses. We need stores and other facilities like hospitals to ensure the daily life needs and health of the children in that school. Thus, the author's suggestions that there would be no shopping centers or houses built lacks a thorough considerations.
Secondly, the author fails to points out it is necessary to build a school. Perhaps there are already enough school in Morganton to satify the requirements of the residents. If this is true, the author's suggestion is meaningless.
Although we assume that residents of Morganton need a new school due to the increase of children and the town council agrees on building a school in Scott Woods, the author could not assert that there is no better use of land since a large majority of their children participate in sports. Perhaps although the number of students join in sports is large, there are already enough space for them to do sport. Or perhaps the time they spend on sports is very short and by sharing a limited sporting hall according to a suitable timetable, their requirement could already be satisfied. Moreover, to children, sports is not the only thing to consider, the author should also consider their other needs, like science, art, music, etc. Without taking consideration of these or other situations, the author's suggestions on build the need to be withdrawn.
In sum, the author's recommendation is not solid at all as it stands. In order to convince me to agree with his ideas, the author should first show me that a school is required in that town, and the author should also present a clear blueprint of the school site with a premise of how to protect the current natural scenes. Moreover, the design of the alotted land should be carefully made in order to fulfill a balanced development of children. |
