正文:
Perhaps nothing, in terms of sociology, is more controversial than the debate over whether a public official must hold the highest ethical and moral standards so as to be an effective leader. Frankly, many arguers, like the speaker, hold the view that leaders with noble character and lofty sentiment are necessary to be effective. From my view, however, it is not completely true to say that those standards are indispensable to be an impressing and powerful leader.
The primary reason for my propensity is that maintaining the highest ethical and moral standards is visionary and incapable for an effective leader. For the first thing, it is difficult or even impossible to define accurately what highest standards are(due to lack of widely accepted criteria in regard to the trait).Obviously, without an authentic definition, it is impossible to judge whether
an effective leader meet the standards , not to say reach the highest standards. Furthermore, sometimes to be highest ethical and moral standards leaders and effective leaders appear to contradict. Let’s take an extreme case for example that killing for meat is immoral, in point of some highest ethical and moral standards, then should our officials bring out an act prohibiting us from having meat? Undoubtedly, it is ridiculous and fallacious for public official to do this.
Additionally, different situations call for different characteristics. With highest ethical and moral standards, leaders can be effective in certain situations, but not others. Collecting and reporting information on the activities, movements, and plans of an enemy or competitor, as we all known, has far-reaching influence upon the results of warfare. We have to admit that an effective leader in the war must be adept in spying. However, this is brutal and unacceptable for a person who maintains those standards, that is say, a noble leader cannot be an striking leader.
Granted,a public official must maintain a high ethical and moral standard to make the public believe that he is just the right one to lead them, or he will fall down from where he rose up. The Watergate Case is an illuminating example here. When President Richard Nixon's dishonesty and improper operations in the reelection was revealed to the public, people in this nation doubted if Nixon was still reliable and had the qualification to be the President. At last, Nixon was impeached and became the first one in American history to resign during his term of President
To sum up, the highest ethical and moral standards are not essential for public officials to be effective leaders. And some other traits are also important to be an effective leaders say intelligence, dominance, adaptability, persistence, integrity, socioeconomic status, and self-confidence just to name a few. 实力有限,有改写成分,求拍。:D |
