【题目】argument 14
The following appeared in a memo from the owner of Green Thumb Gardening Center, a small business serving a suburban town.
"There is evidence that consumers are becoming more and more interested in growing their own vegetables. A national survey conducted last month indicated that many consumers were dissatisfied with the quality of fresh vegetables available in supermarkets. And locally, the gardening magazine Great Gardens has sold out at the Village News stand three months in a row. Thus, we at Green Thumb Gardening Center can increase our profits by greatly expanding the variety of vegetable seeds we stock for gardeners this coming spring."

In this memo, the owner of Green Thumb Gardening Center asserts that the company will increase profits by expanding the variety of vegetable seeds they stack for gardeners this coming spring. To support this assertion, the speaker sites a national survey conducted a month ago which showed dissatisfaction of many consumers with the quality of fresh vegetables in supermarkets; he also points out that a local gardening magazine has sold out three months in a row. I find this argument weak, for three reasons.
First of all, the national wide survey only shows an average level of consumers across the nation, it can't indicate level of local residents, maybe local consumers are satisfied with vegetables in supermarket. Even if local consumers are dissatisfied with vegetables in supermarket as well, many of them might still keeping buying vegetables in the supermarket instead of growing them themselves.
Secondly, the fact that a certain gardening magazine has sold out in one newsstand in the town is a weak evidence that the town's consumers would like to buy seeds from GT. The way the magazine sold out is unknown, perhaps the magazine was sold at a lower price because the newsstand has an excessive stock, perhaps others newsstands in the town have no stock for this magazine for some reason so the residents who want to buy one have no choice but buy from this newsstand, even perhaps the magazine is not on growing vegetables but such things like how to prune tree branches.
Finally, even if residents in this town decide to grow vegetables themselves, instead of vegetable seeds, what they need most may be some methods of growing plants especially vegetables correctly. And there may be many other companies selling seeds, no evidence shows that consumers would buy GT's.
In sum, the owner's argument is unconvincing. To strengthen it the owner must provide evidences that consumers are dissatisfied with vegetables in supermarket, and that as a result they'd like to eat vegetables they grow on their own. In addition, expanding the variety of vegetables seeds is not the only way to increase profits, offering planting methods and some other service are also recommended.

(总体感觉已经很完整了,语言也不错,错误不多,题目中的谬误也几乎全都找出来,但是反驳力度不够,所以驳论段显得单薄,应当多举反例)
