In our childhood, we were often taught to abide by the rules and principles that promote the society forward. The statement above asserts students should have skepticism to whatever they study, and they should question what they are taught instead of accepting it passively. I think the two arguments are reasonable and useful for society’s development and students’ progress.
The conventional teacher-student relationship is an important part of education. Sociologists point out that this relationship is asymmetrical or unbalanced, with the teacher in a position of authority and the student having little choice but to passively absorb the information provided by the teacher. Hence, we can tell the value of skepticism for students to improve themselves, to be the master of the class.
The skepticism is the engine of the society and a discipline. From ancient time, human being had been exceeding their antecedent by questioning their processors’ theory and improving their ancestors’ technique. Bruno doubted the geocentric theory, acclaiming the center of universe is the sun, and the earth is surrounding the sun and rotating around in a circle the sun. As a result, he was burned to die. However, his theory enlightened the following generation, which directed the research on the astrology and physics. Watt saw the water boiling in his childhood, and asked his mother why the steam could push the cap of the pot. His mother told him it was common and nothing of that was special. He believed there must be some principles in that process and sought the answer by himself. So he designed the steam engine, which propelled the industrial revolution that totally changed the way the world developed and the relationship between countries.
Before the revolution, the world developed in a slow speed. On contrast, the productivity and the level of people’s life are vastly elevated after that. England developed in an implausible speed with the help of the steam engine, which made it become the dominator of the world. The skepticism is the key to the truth and students should explore the mystery they face, on which the prosperity of the society is based.
Students doubt what they are taught can improve their level of knowledge. The process of questioning is consummating their pattern of thinking. The result of skepticism often comes out that students are in a wrong direction, but it is the course that will really matter. Through the course of deliberation, students must consider the whole theory in different perspective, understanding the theory perfectly. Sometimes, the reason why students suspect may be the level of their knowledge is not so enough for them to understand some theories that they will have questions during the process of learning. It would be favorable for students to improve after their questions are solved. If they don’t ask for the answers, it may take a long time to understand that by themselves. So the skepticism is a good habit in the path to the truth.
However, suspecting all the stuff studied is not a wise option for students because it may be a behavior of waste time. Students should think the questions first to see if they can work out by themselves or there is no need to question that, for it is really just right.
The spirit of skepticism is a good quality for students to move forward. The development of the world needs the motive force, especially the skepticism. Nevertheless, everything has its own limit, so does skeptics. So using the magic of skepticism in the reasonable range is a wonderful thing for individual, society, even the world. |
