Does the artist rather than the critic give some thing of lasting value? To some extent I generally concede that the artist give us a unique perspective to understand the world around us, and the critic provide profound insights to the works of the artists, however, what really reflects the value , belief, and ideal of our society is surely the artists rather than the critic whose artistic
works are a record of history
of human in a sense.

The creative works of artists help us make a better understanding of real nature and innate characteristics of human. Take an example of literature, Hemingway's The
Old Man and The Sea gives us a vivid picture of an old hero, whose courage, power, wisdom, and persistence impressed us and inspiring our youth forever. Mark Twain's Huckleberry Finn opens the readers' eyes to the issues of racism, freedom, conscience, and confidence, which is a good book for students to learn the realities of modern American. The melody of For Elise brings people to a peace world without pressure and struggle.. In short, the artist makes a lasting contribution to preservation of value of the society.


Critic has several merits in evaluating arts. For one thing, critic helps us understand and interpret art, especially a critic who is particular familiar with the meaning of one piece of art. Any art is a conveying of the inspiration and creativity of the artist. For most common people, we do not have enough knowledge of art, the opinions of critic provide us a profound insights about those works. For another thing, the evaluation of the artistic work of a critic offers the important feedbacks for the artist, which can result a promotion in the quality of an art. For example, to a new director of a film , even the film is popular in audiences , from a professional perspective there are several defects such as the plain plot and
the confound setting , all of which would give the director a worthy proposals and be beneficial to the next film for the director.


However, the critic merely judges the art from the external standards, and they cannot really touch the innate and hidden feelings and emotions, or the deep ideas of the artists. After all, all of artistic works are ways of expressing the desire of artists, and the criticism of the works are more or less subjective and be effected by the values, religions, experience, professional knowledge of the critics, which can not be completely fair. Especially the blindly admiring authorities have a severe impart on the appreciating the art. Vincent Van Gogh use his thick strokes and brilliant colors to describe his emotion
response to the world, yet, he never be appreciated by the critics of his times, because the art critic's judgment is limited by the narrow confines of old and established standards for evaluation.


In sum, by art the artist provides an invaluable and unique mirror of culture of their times, and the critic played a supplementary role in help the laymen understanding the ideas and meaning s of masters. However, we must take rational and objective views to tackle with the role of judging the artists works. The overdue and prejudiced criticism will do a service to the society, which also harm those artists.
