Urbanism and the Everyday

Because of the increasing intensity of non-local influences, the design and development of urban places need to be conceptualised across multiple scales. This is true not only in big metropolises but also in medium-sized cities, such as Turku and Jyväskylä. An important starting point for the Summer School is the tension between the recognition of the genuine value of local communities and everyday life and the increasing need to impose new regeneration and branding initiatives. We encourage participants to go beyond these dualisms and seek common points between the perspectives of grass-root driven everyday urbanism and the agendas of economic development through creativity and events. The question is how to interpret global influences on local level and create unique environments for various users: local residents as well as visitors and economic actors.

Task - Re-inventing Urban Places

Turku is the European Capital of Culture in 2011. The programme of the year creates an excellent starting point for a rich approach to "everyday wellbeing" of Turku's modernistic urban sub-centres. The site in Jyväskylä, a highly potential empty inner-city factory area, invites to imagine place-based innovation and unexpected scenarios for the city and region. In both cities, the study areas are in an early phase of planning and development providing real opportunities to influence and part-take in debate. The students are asked to critically explore these themes. The aim is to suggest programmes, process tools and designs that have the power to reposition places, making them attractive to new audiences, while building on local strengths and retaining accountability.

The Structure of the Course

The first days of the course are spent at the University of Technology in its Otaniemi campus. This part of the course consists of lectures on topics related to the theme Urbanism and the Everyday and Finnish architecture, planning and culture. There will also be a full-day presentation of the City of Helsinki, including a tour of recent planning projects. This section of the programme aims at facilitating the practical work in the main part of the Summer School.

The core of the event is the active block of ten days in Turku and Jyväskylä following the opening section. The participants will be divided into two groups and travel to the partner cities where active project planning and workshops will take place. In Turku and Jyväskylä the participants are invited to analyse the existing conditions and to suggest innovative and realistic improvements to the environment of the planning area. Working in small groups the participants will make their own proposals in accordance with the theme of the course. Work will be tutored by experienced planners and other experts of Urban Studies and the final proposals will be presented to the decision-makers, the general public and the local press.

The working language of the course is English. A perfect command, however, is not required. There will be mutual assistance within the groups.
