140.The following appeared in a report of the Committee on Faculty
Promotions and Salaries at Elm City University.

"During her seventeen years as a professor of botany, Professor Thomas has
proved herself to be well worth her annual salary of $50,000. Her classes
are among the largest at the university, demonstrating her popularity
among students. Moreover, the money she has brought to the university in
research grants has exceeded her salary in each of the last two years.
Therefore, in consideration of Professor Thomas' demonstrated teaching and
research abilities, we recommend that she receive a $10,000 raise and a
promotion to Department Chairperson; without such a raise and promotion,
we fear that Professor Thomas will leave Elm City University for another
college."

○1班级大不说明受欢迎,除非来上课的人都是因为喜欢她的课。即使受欢迎,教学能力未必强。
○2捐助超过年薪不说明捐助多。不能证明研究能力。研究能力取决于其他因素:研究成果(production)。
○3没有证据证明其他人不如她成功。
○4没有证据证明她会离开学校。

1.课程人数多不代表一定受欢迎,很可能是因为她的课是必修课
2.there is no evidence to support that she deserves the raise because of her exceeded money brought to the university. it is entirely possible that other professors may bring more grants to the university than professor T did
3.even though professor T made a great contribution to the university, there is no evidence to prove that she can do a good job as Department Chairperson. 很可能她适合教学但不适合行政,也就是说这个promotion不一定合适

(1)她的班级是最大的班级并不一定demonstrating her popularity,可能是她的招生要求比较低admission requirement is loose,或者这个学科是社会上或者当地比较热门的学科popular speciality

(2)缺乏和其他教授情况的比对,不能说明她在吸取资金drawing funds方面的贡献

(3)由于缺乏对所有faculy menbers 情况的了解和对比,贸然地加薪pay rise和升职promoteXX to a higher position可能会对其他教职员工不公平,或者造成资金紧张 financial strain

(4)没有证据表明她tend to leave Elm City University for another college.
