Whether faculty should spend time outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach depends primarily on the specific academic area. Outside work is inappropriate in a few certain fields, while in most fields both students and faculty can gain a lot in a variety of respects when a professor complements academic duties with real-world experiences.
In those academic fields such as mathematics and physics, there is barely some work a professor can do outside academia; besides, there is no need that teaching task is done outside academia; after all, such disciplines are usually theoratical and abstract, and pratical work outside can hardly contribute to the teaching and learning.
With respcts to most academic area in which pratical work plays a very important role, I strongly agree that it is worthwhile for college faculty to work outside academia in professions related to their field. The primary reason is that the pace of technolegical advancement, social changes and academical progress is so quick that knowledge contained in recently published testbooks often lags students from getting the latest news and knowledge they need. That requires faculty in college to go outside the academia to collect as much information as possible to essure that the teaching does not fall behind.
Secondly, practical working experiance in non-academic world will improve the faculty's understanding of the courses they teach. Doing some research and training on their subject outside the class-room premises will undoubtably broaden the thinking of the faculty, at the same time it will enable them to impart more efficient knowledge to the subject, with relevance to current trends. Faculty must be trained outside their classrooms in their respective subjects if they want to impart efficient and efficacious knowledge.
Thirdly, professors who keep abreast with the changing demands of work as a professional can help students who are serious about pursuing a career in that field to make more infomed career decisions. Students can choos jobs with the instruction of the teacher without wasting time on hesitancy.
In sum, for some basic academic fields it is not necessary for faculty to work outside academia, while for other academic fields it is appropriate for faculty to work outside academia.
