We can usually learn much more from peoplewhose views we share than from people whose views contradict our own;disagreement can cause stress and inhibit learning.
===============================================================================
We always would like to stay with the peoplewhose hobbies, characters and views to current affairs resemble ours. Mostpeople insist that those agreements lead to a less stressful environment, andhence encourage us to learn from each other. The logic seems apparentlyreasonable, but I have my own reservations. Inversely, agreement does not leadto effective learning, and we will learn much more from those whose viewscontradict our own.
By quoting the definition in psychology, learningis the process of acquiring new knowledge, behaviors, skills, values orpreferences, and may involve synthesizing different types of information. Obviouslyit emphasizes two keywords – new and different. In a single-view and agreeablesphere, it’s tough for the existence of different opinions, let alone acquiringnew knowledge. Therefore, an effective learning calls for a diversity of understandings.
Staying in an environment with differentviews could help us improve our own opinions. None of us dare to say he/she isalways right, but sometimes without the others’ indications, it’s difficult forus to find our own weaknesses. The human beings are social animals. Throughoutour lives, we have to learn how to communicate with different people, how torecognize the others’ emotions like happiness and sadness, how to deal with therelation between our instincts and the social rules for keeping our owncharacter as well as being helpful for the others, etc. Because we live in acolorful world including different people of different types, we improve ouropinions about the world time and time again, so as to have the healthy andself-affirmative characters.
Furthermore, conflict of opinions could giveus a choice to view something in a new perspective. Different views always leadto debating, which seems stressful but useful for solving problems. Bydebating, both sides could express their own points, and present the advantagesthere could be, meanwhile they also show their disadvantages which give bothsides an opportunity to realize the hidden risk and find a novel and wisesolution. That’s why many top universities insist keeping a certain percentageof students from different culture backgrounds and encourage the communicationsbetween different cultures, different nations and different ideologies.
Admittedly, we must face the fact that astressful environment could lead to a bad temper for someone and hence inhibitlearning. Because the world, which is rapidly changing, is filled with differentviews and competitions, the stress is inevitable. In order to adapt to the situation,we must learn how to handle our own temper.
Tosum up, while feeling a little uncomfortable and stressful at times, we learnmuch more through the interactions between different viewpoints. Moreover, withouta variety of perspectives, we could not get so much new approaches of science,progresses in social development, etc. And it’s crucial to protect thedifferent views and diversity of culture.
