147 "Tradition and modernization are incompatible. One must choose between them."

During the development of the society, tradition and modernization are a pair of closely related topics, which is recognized as contras in the views of some theorists. However, whether the western countries which have achieved the modernization or the eastern ones dedicating to accomplish it, on the basis of tradition, are all researching the consistency and inheritance in the contras of them while during the transformation. Therefore, as long as people deal with them appropriately, the two can exist harmoniously, and contribute to the human beings.

First of all, tradition, which reflects the laws of objective things, is the cornerstone of modernization. It inherits from the history and includes many aspects of a society, such as specific cultures, ideologies, ethics, customs, arts, institutions and so on. The developed and developing countries all have faced a common problem that they have already been in a traditional society separately, and this historical background cannot be jumped during the process of modernization. Hence, any nation can't ignore the issues which have already existed in itself, and always develops and rebuilds based on the previous foundation. Without the tradition, the modernization is just a castle in the air.

In addition, it is the existence of traditional culture that forms a variety of development patterns of modernization. As the nation's tradition determines the ways and solutions of achieving modernization, among the countries with the same nature, the modernization roads vary just because of certain custom’s difference. For instance, Levy have illustrated in his writings that in the circle of culture in East Asia, the modernization road between China and Japan differs as their traditional cultures are not the same. Therefore, if a country just copies a modernization pattern of a developed country without recognizing the traditional customs of itself, it will encounter many problems and can't go well.

Thirdly, the current society with a high structural integration is formed after a long historical evolution of the tradition. The tradition doesn't disappear in the history river but boosts the development of the modernization, which reveals that the customs have been helpful in our modern lives. For example, Japan succeeds in achieving the modernization by using the vigor of its traditions. Thus, not all the traditions are hidebound, or we can't build the modern society.

In conclusion, tradition and modernization are not exclusive. For the successful transformation from tradition to modernization, traditional factors and modern ones help to each other. But in the failure cases, the modern factors are replaced or destroy the old ones. In our society, the tradition and modernization should be conducted appropriately under a well-behaved mechanism.
