ISSUE208 - "The way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests. You can tell much about a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people."

The speaker claims that the appearance and behavior of people reveals their attitudes and interests, which results in a conclusion that the observation of the appearance and behavior of the people can reveals the society's ideas and values. Although the way people look, dress, and act serves as hints to individuals' attitudes and interests under certain circumstance, it is not radical to assert that the appearance and behavior of the people would fully reveal the values of a society.

When turn to the appearance of people, one can obtain a lot of information about their attitudes and interests. As people can easily express their interests and attitudes via choosing specific clothes, acting in a particular way, or performing an eye-contact, it is possible that one can deduct the attitudes, interests, and sometimes ideas of the certain people. For example, Johnny Cash, the famous country music performer, wears just black to pay sympathy to the victims of time and poverty. It is more likely to be a conservative society in which people avoid direct eye touch. And more, the Germans always reveals their discreet attitudes through their act as attentive as possible.

However, the observation of people's appearance and behavior is not effective whether it is a free-expressing society or an oppressed one. From one way, n a free-expressing society in which individuals diverse a lot from each other, the indication one can obtained by observing their appearance may turn out to be to various to work out a conclusion. And from the other way around, in a oppressed society, through their way of looking, dressing and acting one can grasp few clue from the people with extreme uniformity. So it is not a rational way to get the society’s ideas and values via observing the appearance and behavior of the people.

Furthermore, the ideas and values of a certain society is more expressed on the opinions on key issues such as gay marriage, abortion and euthanasia than the mere appearance and behavior. According to common sense, the ideas and values of a society is a complicated system, which can be attained by detailed investigation or depiction, rather than simple observation of the way they look, dress and act.

In sum, from a more sophisticated perspective, the ideas and values of a society may not be acquainted just by the observation of the appearance and behavior, but the points of view of the mainstream toward critical issues. So when it comes to understand a society, if ever, it is more sensible to read their popular books with opinions expressed.
