"I can tailor my research towards solving just about any problem" ----Peter Obele Abue

http://www.education.cornell.edu ... file.cfm?netid=poa4

"Since coming to Cornell's Department of Education, I have realized that I can tailor my research towards solving just about any problem that I care about. Working with Dr Margaret Kroma, I have been exploring issues that have captivated me: Why are some so rich and others so poor? Why do parallels and margins of difference exist among peoples, communities or nations? Why are some communities more organized than others? What role does education of adults play in transforming poor rural communities? And recently, with growing interests in the religious sector in Nigeria, my special focus is in a micro-level analysis of possible correlations between faith-based institutions and their role in poverty reduction. How could faith-based and other local institution form partnerships to reduce poverty in rural villages in Nigeria? With a commitment to return to Nigeria, my studies will help me navigate a locally anchored participatory strategy that can empower the realignments and institutional revisions needed to scale up development action in rural Nigeria. And, though the impact of this development action could be enormous if augmented by external resources, my conviction is that faith-based and other local institutions can develop communities based upon viable growth paths, and thus reduce poverty with little or no outside assistance. "

Peter Obele Abue's profile:

After serving as communications and development coordinator in the catholic diocese of Ogoja, Nigeria, Peter studied at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, where he received a Master's degree in Corporate Communications in 1995. After that he returned to Nigeria and was engaged in community-oriented projects: editor of a local newspaper, coordinator of participatory rural appraisals. In 1999, he initiated a rural, primary school for orphaned children in his local region of Ogoja. In the Fall of 2001, Peter came to Cornell.
