Master of Science in Computer Science (MSc)
The fundamental requirement is that you must have sufficient background for graduate studies in computer science. Most applicants demonstrate that they meet this requirement by holding a four-year Bachelor's degree (or more advanced degrees) in Computer Science. If you do not have a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, there are other ways to meet this requirement
================================================
The department focuses its research in the following areas:Artificial Intelligence: computer vision, decision theory/game theory, knowledge representation and reasoning, intelligent user interfaces, machine learning, natural language understanding and generation, robotics and haptics.
Computer Graphics: animation, imaging, modeling, rendering, visualization
Data Management and Mining: business intelligence, data integration, genomic analysis, text mining, web databases.
Formal Verification and Analysis of Systems: analog, digital and hybrid systems, VLSI, protocols, software.
Human Centered Technologies: human computer interaction (HCI), visual, haptic and multimodal interfaces, computer-supported cooperative work (CSCW), visual analytics.
Networks, Systems, and Security: high performance computing/parallel processing, networking, operating systems and virtualization, security.
Scientific Computing: numerical methods and software, differential equations, linear algebra, optimization
Software Engineering and Programming Languages: development tools, foundations of computation, middleware, programming languages, software engineering.
Theory: algorithmics (including empirical), bioinformatics and data analysis, graph theory, algorithmic game theory.

Evaluating Applications
The department begins to evaluate applications in January and continues until the program is full, which usually occurs in early May. (Applicants generally receive admission decisions by April 30.) The review process involves ranking applicants against one other in different areas of the department's research. The department attaches the greatest weight to the letters of reference, with transcripts and statements of interests also of great importance. In looking for successful candidates, it also seeks evidence of creativity, intellectual curiosity, initiative, and a desire to engage in hard and rewarding work.

Financial Assistantships
Typically, full-time MSc and PhD students receive offers of full financial support from the department for a guaranteed period. The department's financial support takes the form of assistantships which entail some combination of teaching and/or research duties. No separate application is needed for financial support.
M.Sc.MSc students in good standing each receive $18 500 per year based on a combination of teaching and/or research duties. Teaching duties require an average of 12 hours per week. MSc students are typically supported through a teaching assistantship for their first two terms and a research assistantship for the remainder of the program. Support is generally guaranteed for the first 20 months of the program, contingent on the student's satisfactory performance in his or her assigned tasks.
Ph.D. PhD students in good standing each receive $20 000 per year based on a combination of teaching and/or research duties. Teaching duties require an average of 12 hours per week. Whether a PhD student teaches or holds a research assistantship is based on the preferences of the student and his/her supervisor, though PhD students typically TA for at least two terms. Support is generally guaranteed for the first 36 months of the program, contingent on the student's satisfactory performance in his or her assigned tasks.

PhD-Track MSc Program
We are excited about the new PhD Track within our MSc program that we have recently created. Admission to the PhD Track is limited and highly competitive.
Part-Time Industry-Oriented Master's Program
The UBC Computer Science Department has recently paved the way for students in local industry to take graduate courses on a part-time basis leading to an MSc in Computer Science. Studying part time allows students to continue to work while advancing their career and to keep their knowledge up-to-date in this fast-moving field. This short summary contains critical information for prospective students considering this option. Please note that unlike the other graduate options at the UBC Department of Computer Science, the Part-Time Industry-Oriented Master's Program has an application deadline of January 15.
Thesis Master's
12 credit MSc thesis and 18 credits of course work
Comprehensive Course Master's
3 credit MSc essay and 27 credits of course work of which 24 credits must fulfill the Comprehensive Course Requirement.
Third Option
6 credit MSc thesis and 24 credits of course work
Master of Software Systems (MSS)
Program components: Coursework only
PLEASE NOTE:
Applications for the January 2011 intake may be submitted from February 1st to June 15, 2010. The application deadline for this year has been extended, space permitting, to August 1st for International applicants and October 1 for Canadian Citizens and Permanent Residents.
The MSS program does not have a September intake.

Admission Criteria & Application Evaluation
Admission to the MSS program is on a competitve basis: our evaluation process is rigorous and includes ranking applicants on grades, reference letters and technical background. Admission is not guaranteed, even if all the requirements are met.
The number of available spaces in the MSS program varies from year to year and we are sometimes unable to accept qualified applicants due to space limitations.
Because applicants come from a variety of backgrounds, it is impossible to quantitively outline what is required for admission, however applicants must meet these minimum qualifications:
- A bachelor's degree in a field other than computer science or computer engineering. Degrees in a scientific or technical field are preferred, but applicants with degrees in other fields may also be considered;
- Acceptable academic standing as outlined by UBC's Faculty of Graduate Studies. For those with degrees from a Canadian university, a four-year Bachelor抯 degree with a minimum overall B+ standing in third and fourth year level courses is required. Grading systems differ widely between countries, so please verify that you meet the academic requirements by referring to the graduate admission requirements website.
- Demonstrated skills in object-oriented design and programming (OOD/OOP), and knowledge of the basic data structures and algorithms commonly used in computer science. Practical programming skills in the language C++. These skills can be acquired either through coursework or work experience.
- Other assets that lead to a strong application include relevant work or volunteer experience, and excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
Applications for JANUARY 2011 will be accepted starting February 1, 2010. Our application deadline is June 15, 2010 or until all positions have been filled.
1. Graduate Studies Application Form and Processing Fee

A non-refundable application fee of $150 CDN for International students or $90 CDN for Canadians, Landed Immigrants and Permanent Residents. Instructions for methods of payment are also listed on the front sheet of the form. Paper-based application forms can be requested from the MSS office.

Although it is useful to submit a photocopy of your test score with your application, you must arrange to have the official TOEFL or IELTS scores sent directly to the MSS office at UBC by the Testing Lab. When ordering your TOEFL result for submission to UBC, use 0965 for the Institution Code and 99 for the Department Code. Please remember that TOEFL score reports take about eight weeks to arrive, and your application will not be evaluated until we receive your official score.
In order to be considered official, test results must be no more than two years old, from the date of your MSS application.
