ISSUE208 “The way people look, dress and act reveals their altitudes and interestsyou can tell much about a society’s ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people.”

Human beings act as a kind of group animals, could not be apart from society. Their actions, attitudes and belief were not set up alone but through social activities. When related to the issue that people’s way of looking, dressing and acting can reveals their altitudes and interests and these appearance and behavior can even reflect a society’s ideas and values, as far as I’m concerned, the issue fails to fully take the characteristics of all aspects into consideration. Appearance and behavior can only be considered social activities in superficial, there are still much more beneath the surface.

When talking about People’s appearance, like the way people dressing and action. It is a common agreement that they can easily and directly indicates a part of person’s attitude and interests. Clothe is a tool to show off for people. Actors, politician and public people need the help of clothe in order to show their unusual statues and degree. We could often observe that famous actor often wears elaborate dress and equipped precious jewelry to attend banquet and conference. A very good example is Lady gaga, a famous singer of America. She never appeared in public dressed normally. Instead, Lady gaga prefers to dress some very odd clothes, sometimes like an alien. The more she wears unusual, the more she can attract public’s eyesight. However, dressing and action still can be appeared as a camouflage under the limitation in some situation and they cannot reflect the real attitude and interest of individuals sometimes. School is a good example. No matter what the students’ characteristic is, rules in school restrict students to wear clothes of what they want to. Not to mention school rules and teachers’ instruction, restricting students’ action in many ways. What’s more, some people even do not care much about their appearance. Li Ka Shing, regarded as the richest man of China, always wears simplicity. He even takes buses to go to work every day. From the appearance and action, you can never inference what Li’s attitude and interests are. But the fact is, Li Ka Shing fund has contributed at least 130 million Yuan to support people and construction in China.

We have concluded that appearance and action can partially reflect people’s attitudes and interests, but can they reveal a society’s ideas and values? My answer is also partially, not completely. As I said at first, Human beings act as a kind of group animals, could not be apart from society, so did the appearance and actions. If a large groups of people have a trend to wear some kind of clothes or to do some kind of action. Part of the value and ideas of society has already emerged. France people usually wear glories clothes and they process things slowly, especially in the government. Nearly one third of the year, France people are in vacation. This indicates a romance and slowly rhythm life style of France men. Reflecting “Enjoy our lives” to other people around the world. However, neglecting the politic factors, weather conditions and religions are not fair to other countries and societies. Women in Arabia countries cannot exposure their faces and body to other people, they used black robe to cover their whole body. But this does not mean women in Arabia country do not like beauty. It is the external factors that deter them to wear vivid clothes.

To put all the nuts in a shell, when observing the appearance and action of people, without other details and information, we cannot make an overall conclusion neither for the attitudes and interests of individual nor for the ideas and values of a society.

修改bottom的:

The speaker contends that the way people look and dress, certain aspects of the outward appearance of a culture’s people do inform us of their ideas, attitudes and values. In my view, I deeply affirm that clothing requirements of people reflect their attitudes, interests and society's values, women especially.

The dress which people with different geographical features
(人不可能有地理特征) and from different times wear will to some extent represents their attitude towards conservativeness and openness. Women’s wear could reflect the characteristics of the society at that time.(下两个定义?) For instance, compared among Europe, the United States and the Middle East, women’s clothing is quite different that’s because of their different regions on the earth. In other words, because the weather, religion, culture and history. The women of Europe and the United States always wear simple and comfortable clothes, while in the Middle East, women all dress long dresses which have religious characteristics. These differences reflect the degree of social openness.(段落最后的总结不需要,应该放在开头就提出,个人观点) 你这段就是要表现女性的衣着,由各种因素来决定,但是很乱啊,提到了各种概念,地理,时间,社会,三个国家,宗教。

The different fashions which people admire and chase after reveal their understanding or definition of their aesthetic values of the time in which they are living in.(
What's more, women in ancient times were pursuing the variety of fabrics, and the women now are running after fashion and personality. However, the fashion is changing with time. In China’s Han Dynasty, girls think that thin is beautiful because of Zhao Feiyan, a beauty who is very thin that can stand on a bird when she dancing. But in China’s Tang Dynasty, people hold the view that women should be plump just like Yang Yuhuan, one of the Emperor’s wives. So, the standard of beauty is always changing with the changing of society. Even in different ages also have different criterion about clothing. For example, the young people dress for personality while the middle age people focus comfort and taste more.

Meanwhile, the dress or outer appearance people have signifies the cultural collision and assimilation. Europeans love to choose ethical costumes, such as Chinese Cheongsam and Japanese Kimono. However, we find the situation that Chinese like to wear the garments that possess the style of Occident and Bohemia. Furthermore, we also can see that in the clothing field many designers design their clothes within multi-national elements. Therefore, clothes can also reflect the cultural clash and amalgamation.

In the colorful world it is common that we behave differently. The issue's author alleges that we can tell what the society's ideas and values by seemingly observing the appearance and behavior of its people. In my opinion, it is true that we can know partly about people's attitudes and interests judging from the way people look, dress and act; however we can't absolutely say that it reveals the true nature of a society's characteristic.

There is no denying that the way people behave help we find out one's interests and attitudes. Their actions are leading by their minds, thus we can tell their own interests and attitudes by inferring from his deeds. And the way the dress and look partly reflect their aesthetic standard, and the sense of worth. A man who formally dressed in shirt and tie, we can possibly tell he may be a typical gentleman whose behavior maybe polite. A man with a colossus collection of music, we may possibly infer that he might have a strong interest in music. A man who enjoys parties and talking to others, he might have a positive and outgoing attitudes. A typical Chinese monk who enjoy living in temple where there are no noises and other bother things. We can also draw a conclusion that they seek for the purification of the soul and an ascetic lives.

Of course, the situation is not always like that. Sometimes, we our eyes deceive us and let us misjudge one person. That is to say we can’t only rely on what we observe just from the appearance or some other superficial characteristics to determine the society's ideas and values. We may be forced by something such as tyrannical government or by stringent religious believes which can make us to cover our real thoughts and pretend to do something which under that power seem legal or normal, but secretly we do the other way around.  For instance, when the World War two came to an end, the Germany separated into two parts, where the East Germany was governed by the Russia. During that period of time there were many secret police set by the national security agency in East Germany whose aim was to arrest people who considered the revolution was needed to reform the corrupted socialism in the nation. Most of the publications and media are forbidden to say anything against the socialism. Simply put, many people in the nation were forced to act as if they enjoy socialism. We surely can't judge from what people said to demonstrate the people in the East Germany lived in harmony.

From the discussion above, we,admittedly, can learn a person's interests and attitudes from what he talks, and what has he done. But it is still a tip of iceberg to reflect what the society really looks like let along the ideas and the value of it. There are many factors should be taken into consideration to show the real aspect of the society, such as historical influence and culture differences. Also, during the process of globalization, the people around the world are becoming more or less similar to each others, which can make a lot of trouble when discriminating society’s special characteristics including social values and ideas.

Human beings act as a kind of group animals(gregarious animal), could not be apart from society. She never appeared in public dressed normally. Instead, Lady gaga prefers to dress some very odd clothes, sometimes like an alien. The more she wears unusual, the more she can attract public’s eyesight.(通过however过渡,我推断lady gaga的例子应该是can reflect the real attitude and interest of individuals但是我没看出来前后之间逻辑关系) However, dressing and action still can be appeared as a camouflage under the limitation in some situations and they cannot reflect the real attitude and interest of individuals sometimes. School is a good example. No matter what the students’ characteristic is, rules in school restrict students to wear clothes of what they want to. Not to mention school rules and teachers’ instruction, restricting students’ actions in many ways. What’s more, some people even do not care much about their appearance. Li Ka Shing, regarded as the richest man of China, always wears simplicity(wears simply不会更好?). He even takes buses to go to work every day. From the appearance and action, you can never inference what Li’s attitude and interests are.<--感觉前后没必然逻辑关系-->But the fact is, Li Ka Shing’s fund has contributed at least 130 million Yuan to support people and constructions in China.
We have concluded that appearance and action can partially reflect people’s attitudes and interests, but can they reveal a society’s ideas and values? My answer is also partially, not completely.

208. The way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests. You can tell much about a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people.

From time to time, I’d love to sit in a bar or café and observe strangers around as well as passersby. The beauty of that is my gradual realization that their appearance and behavior reveal some parts of their attitudes and interests, and that people, getting together as a whole, provide a perfect illustration of a society’s ideas and values.

The way people look and dress, to some extent, explains their interests and values, especially people of this generation. For instance, fast acceptance of new things exhibits a society’s cultural and social inclusion and comprehensiveness. The pursuit of fashion indicates people’s preference of modernization while over-enthusiasm means meaningless blindness. A city with a large proportion of obese persons suggests its attention of enjoyment and lack of self-control. In China, some people criticize twenty-somethings about their unique clothes, strange haircut, gutty color of the hair and seemingly improper behavior, which caused a hit discussion throughout the internet and later the mass media pointing to their realization of individualism, which is quite differentiated from the older generations. People dress the clothes they like and feel comfortable about their appearance, because their beliefs and values serve as backbones.

Nevertheless, appearance sometimes can be confusing or even deceitful and help people hide themselves from others. Supposing a girl wants to be popular at school, so she imitates the way popular girls dress. Even though she puts these clothes on, the new appearance still cannot change who she is and what she believes, which just make her look like a lost lamb. Likewise, the majority of adults wearing a suit and tie to work don’t mean they are all workaholics. There is a large possibility that they prefer wearing t-shirts and relatively slow lifestyle. This kind of appearance on account of special occasion barely conveys the real side of them. Celebrities are a group of people who can be rather confusing. Today one may be wearing an elegant dress showing up on an award ceremony; tomorrow he or she will probably turn up on a fashion magazine with sexiest underwear. Who knows what she really value? They demonstrate what they want others to see and the reality is like the sky out of touch.

On the other hand, compared to appearance, behavior seems to be more reliable. Some people are sincere followers of mammonism and possess of numerous amounts of money, but they are extremely mean to themselves and others and even have no desire for materials, let alone clothes. Their worship of money cannot be seen by appearance. As we talk about the relationship between appearance and behavior, which reminds me of a recent event. It is the time when Chinese family members assemble on the purpose of celebrating Spring Festival. This year will create a new record of the population of human movements, which is a solid evidence of Chinese’s high value on familial affection. In the meantime, some renowned celebrities rejected the invitation from the Spring Festival Gala, an outstanding opportunity to bring their careers into a next level. The rejection represents their attitudes toward the relationship between family and career, which appearance cannot tell us.

In a nutshell, both appearance and behavior, to some degree, are mirrors reflecting people’s attitudes and interests. Notwithstanding, if one would like to discover other’s real thought rather than illusory shadow, I would propose that he or she place emphasis on behavior.

In the colorful world it is common that we behave differently. The issue's author alleges that we can tell what the society's ideas and values by seemingly(不知道这个词放在这的作用?) observing the appearance and behavior of its people. In my opinion, it is true that we can know partly(个人比较喜欢partially,呵呵) about people's attitudes and interests judging from the way people look, dress and act; however, we can't absolutely say that it reveals the true nature of a society's characteristic.

There is no denying that the way people behave helps we(us) find out one's interests and attitudes. Their actions are leading by their minds, thus we can tell their own interests and attitudes by inferring from his deeds. And the way they dress and look partly reflects their aesthetic standard(,去掉) and the sense of worth. A man who formally dressed in shirt and tie(没这种用法), we can possibly tell he may be a typical gentleman whose behavior maybe polite.(建议用在take a man ….. for example的结构里) A man with a colossus(colossal) collection of music, we may possibly infer that he might have a strong interest in music. A man who enjoys parties and talking to others, he might have a positive and outgoing attitudes. A typical Chinese monk who enjoys living in temple where there are no noises and other bother(bothersome) things. We can also draw a conclusion that they seek(he seeks,因为你前面用的单数) for the purification of the soul and an ascetic lives.(群例法~我也用了,但是我不知道这算不算是好的develop)

Of course, the situation is not always like that. Sometimes, we(去掉) our eyes deceive us and let us misjudge one(用one的话好像是特别强调了数量) person. That is to say we can’t only rely on what we observe just from the appearance or some other superficial characteristics to determine the society's ideas and values. We may be forced by something such as tyrannical government or by stringent religious believes(这边你给了两个方面,但下面举的例子是就指表达了前面一个) which can make us to cover our real thoughts and pretend to do something which under that power seem legal or normal, but secretly we do things by the other way around(去掉).  For instance, when the World War two came to an end, the(去掉) Germany separated into two parts, where(这个貌似不是很恰当,但among也不可以,between还是in which?) the East Germany was governed by the(去掉) Russia. During that period of time there were many secret police set by the national security agency in East Germany whose aim was to arrest people who considered the revolution was needed to reform the corrupted socialism in the nation.(后半句没看懂) Most of the publications(press) and media are forbidden to say anything against the socialism. Simply put, many people in the nation were forced to act as if they enjoy socialism. We surely can't judge from what people said to demonstrate the people in the East Germany lived in harmony.

From the discussion above, we, admittedly, can learn a person's interests and attitudes from what he talks, and what has he done (what he has done). But it is still a tip of iceberg to(that) reflect what the society really looks like, let along(alone) the ideas and the value of it. There are many factors which should be taken into consideration to show the real aspect of the society, such as historical influence and culture differences. Also, during the process of globalization, the(去掉) people around the world are becoming more or less similar to each others, which can make a lot of trouble when discriminating society’s special characteristics including social values and ideas.

208 "The way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests. You can tell much about a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people."

Does it reveal people's attitudes and interests through the way of their look, dress and act? Can we tell about the society's ideas and values by its people's appearance and behaviors? Many people may say "yes" to these two questions just as the speaker claimed. But I can't totally agree with this view.

To begin with, let's turn to the way people look and dress. It may be really possible for you to learn about a man's attitude and interest through his dressing and look. When you see a boy who is always in a sportswear and full of vigor, you may naturally believe that he loves sports very much and enjoys life. Similarly, when there's a girl who loves dressing a longuette and always with a soft smile on the face, you may infer that she's a tender girl and loves dancing.

However, when it comes to telling about a society's ideas and values, it's not really true. Admittedly, in the past, you may tell a society's ideas and values by observing how its people look or dress, now it is impossible to do so. In the past, women in China like dressing cheongsam due to the society's define such as tender, classic and so forth for women. From which we can see that the society was conservative and advocated confucianism. Nevertheless, in American, women 1ike wear T-shirts and jeans from which we can indicate their pursuit for freedom and the society's openness and innovation. But now, with the ongoing procedure of globalization and the progress of society, people can buy clothes from all over the world and try every styles they like. Even the Arabian women who were always considered dressing conservatively now begin to abandon the traditional dressing ways and attempt more fashionable clothes. So how can you tell anything of a society only through the way someone look or dress?

Then let's consider whether people's behavior will reveal their attitudes in order to tell much about the society's ideas and values. There's a common saying that Germans are punctual, Japanese are polite, Englishmen are gentle. For instance, my uncle who is working in German always tell me that people in Germany rarely be late for any meeting or party. If being late, they will be so ashamed. Moreover, they are rigorous in doing everything. Even a small part in a machine, they will measure time and again in order to get the accurate size. From these actions, we can see that Germans are punctual and rigorous so that their society is full of rules and principles and that’s why it’s famous for German-Made.

Yet with the development of the society and a fierce competition, all countries begin to absorb other countries good characters and qualities in order to strengthen themselves. Take we Chinese for example, now people in China also become punctual, polite, independent, innovational and gentle in order to adapt to the new situation of the world. As a result, it's more and more difficult to tell about the values and ideas of the society through the way people act.

In a word, if we really want to tell about a society's ideas and values, we should trace back for its history and get more about its society moral codes. Studying on history can we learn how the society developed and understand its national spirits in order to understand its ideas and values more easily. And a society's moral code is another standard for us to think about the society. To sum up, hardly can we tell about a society's ideas and values only through observing the appearance and behaviors of its people.

。。。。)People dress the clothes they like and feel comfortable about their appearance, because their beliefs and values serve as backbones.(感觉这一段的例证不是很有逻辑啊。 。。。。)

On the other hand, (前面没有过on the one hand,感觉有点突兀)compared to appearance, behavior seems to be more reliable. 。。。)Their worship of money cannot be seen by appearance. As we talk about the relationship between appearance and behavior, which reminds me of a recent event. 。。。。。

The emergence of clothing is considered to be one remarkable sign of the enlightenment of human society. As time goes by, the meaning of clothing is not restricted to resisting the frigid air or just to cover their body, they can be a mirror reflecting people's principles and hobbies. How people behave and look also tell a lot about their ideas and values.

People are social animals, they are conscious that their look, dress and act will be presented and judged. So the choices of clothing and behavior become a way to express their idea and principle. It is not rare to see fashion pursuers strive for latest handbags and high-heeled shoes as a symbol of taste. Consider performance art as an example. Artists gathered in particular place or time to behave in a particular way in order to arouse audience's awareness of basic principles. In general, these artists concerned about wars, impoverishment and society; therefore, the performance illustrates their attitudes toward dilemmas of contemporary society.

A society has its own ethic norms and esthetic standards. Living in it, people is inevitably assimilated. It is often the case that the value of a nation is embodied in its people. In ancient Greece, people wore elegant clothing and debated over philosophy topics. In Louis XV's reign, people pursued a taste of Rococo and favored in attending salon. People's dressing habit and behavior change with the progress in their conception, and sometimes social upheaval is involved. For example, in ancient China, women are supposed to wear modest forms of attire. That is to say, women are usually required to cover more of their bodies than men are. Also in that time, a private contact of a single man and a single woman is considered to be an indecent behavior. By contrast, in modern society, women wear sexy clothing to accentuate their charm and people is encouraged to socialize. In fact, these changes can be attributed to the change of ethic norms of society because gender equality is accepted by modern citizens.

Admittedly, empirical experience tells us that sometimes the average people's situation does not fully reflect the essential mental condition of a nation. Simply as the class in power have advantage to realize their ideas. Consider the time of medieval, the peasant did not have weapon to defend their royal, but this contradict to the prevalence of cavalier in that age. The fact is that they are not allowed to private collect weapons. Therefore, if people’s clothing and behavior can tell something about the norm of society, it is likely to be reflected in the class group, especially in ancient times.

From what I have discussed, it is safe to draw the conclusion that people integrate into society by accepting normal clothing taste and the way of behavior. The spiritual world of the people in a certain period can be reflected in their daily life.

Commonly, we can get some signals from the appearance and action of a person, such as his outlook on society, individuality and attitude towardtowardslife. However, I have to admit that,(感觉逗号应该删掉) we can not rely on it too much, and in some situation, it will mislead us.

Firstly I analyze whether people and look
(people’s look) can reveals (
去掉can, whether已经可以传达语气了) people (people’s) inner thoughts. In fact, to many people, they live under (with) the opinion that appearance is a way to identify who they are and (to) show their difference from others. If a huge number of people in a country are obese, we can certainly get the conclusion the citizen are equipped with the abundance of material and put the pleasure before the physical health. If people in a country have the tendency to buy ready-made and inexpensive clothes, the phenomenon shows that most of their society ideas are saving rather than consuming. From ancient time to modernized (modern) society, it is believed that having the soft and fair skin show that one is from a relatively high status (class) in society. (不严密,难道就没有天生肤质好的人,此处应该点明为什么皮肤好就社会地位高) people’s skin are more soften and pink , who are in the relatively high statue ,than those who are labors. However, the different appearance is more related to the weather and custom. For instance, those who wear little in the strong sunlight will be tanned while those living in very cold regions such as the arctic tend to be fairer. The local people go with few clothes when the climate is torrid, while some people living the area which near the Arctic, they have to put on many to stand the chill. So the appearance is of importance to judge a person or a country, judge什么,最好写清楚)but it not the only one.
(
Additionally, people’s behaviors, in some degree, can give us clues about their inner thoughts even their society as a whole. (
In some countries, woman  staying
at home do to (to do) the chores and (to) take care of their children. Can we claim that in such countries women are considered as inferiors or they put (give) the value of family priority?
In my respect, any conclusion is too arbitrary before studying the other factors such (as) the economical standard. (
The alternate is the family can get enough financial support from the government and the government encourages more babies because of the low birth rate. (原因可以再点透点,so the woman do not have to get a job but to stay in home taking care of their children) There are so many likelihood (换成factors可能会好一点) to stimulate different person do to (to do) the same thing. It is too easy and misleading to put them in one category only by observing their fact (fact不合适, 换成behavior).
(
In sum, when investing a individual or a nation’s society ideas and value, we should study deeper including analyzing appearance ,behavior , government policy and so on, because these factors may work together to affect them.

(你的观点中behavior可以反应ideas and value基本没有提到,这样就直接说不能仅从behavior判断社会的ideas and value似乎不是很合适,结尾应该加强appearance, act and look是否能反应的观点,你直接升华了。。。)

The assertion that we could judge a society's ideas and values from the way people look, dress and act, from my perspective, is unfair. Although in some specific cases, we could tell something from the appearance and behavior of the people; in other respects, we should never do that.

To start with, the way people look could sometimes reflect their living habits, thus informing us their attitudes and values. For instance, a society with more people who are suffering from obesity suggests the people living in this region have the preference for convenience and enjoyment to a healthy diet and doing sports. Nevertheless, people's genes might contribute more to what they look like. If the people are all born to own poor digestive systems, for example, if they are troubled by indigestion, in other words, they could not absorb what they have taken well, they tend to look slim whatever they eat indulgently.

Secondly, how people dress might in some respects informs their ideas and thoughts towards life and society accurately. Still remember the character named Evgeni Belikov in the novel The Man in A Case written by the famous Russian storyteller Anton Chekhov? I am deeply impressed by the vivid depiction of the hero Belikov, who always wears a cotton-padded overcoat, buries his face in the standing collar, and wears a pair of dark glasses. This appearance indeed indicates a person of conservation and hatred of the world. However, some other reasons also lead to the way people dress. One aspect is the people's economical situation. If the group of people are living in a society which is wealthy and the poverty gap is rather small, their dressing might tend to be fashion and with high quality. While on the contrary, if they live a life which just makes ends meet, what they could do might be just dreaming those pretty and warm clothes. Other cases, such as the weather condition and working environment, might also influence their dressing. As a consequence, it seems too difficult to tell their ideas from their appearance.

In the third place, I have to concede that some people's behavior might indicate their values. People who pose with elegance and grace are most likely to be with high dignity; while the ones who often express dirty words show their dissatisfaction of the society and their lack of timber. But under some circumstances, how people act could betray their values and attitudes. In China, many pre-school children attend the art courses; say the courses of dance, piano, violin, singing, drawing, etc. But according to a survey made by an association named The Development of Juveniles in China, only less than 10% children attend these courses for their interests. The rest are all forced by their parents. Meanwhile, their parents urged their children to attend the courses for different reasons. Some want their children to acquire some skills out of class, while others want to compare their children with their colleagues' kids and crave for others' praise. Different people have their different desires, thus telling their ideas by their behaviors is not as a simple case as we might have thought.

Of course, some other reasons, such as the political ones and religious ones, also result in people's appearance and act instead of their attitudes and values. Therefore, we could easily come to the conclusion that the speaker's claim that we could tell much about a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people for the reason that the way people look, dress and act could reveal their attitudes and interests is not always accurate for all the above reasons discussed above. And we should pay more attention to our thoughts and accomplishment instead of emphasize too much on appearance and behaviors.

Consider
the performance art as an example. Artists gathered in a particular place or time to(
去掉) behave in a particular(和前面重复了,可换为specific) way in order to arouse audience's(audiances’) awareness of basic principles. In general, these artists concerned about(concerning) wars, impoverishment and society; therefore, the performance illustrates their attitudes toward dilemmas of contemporary society.

A society has its own ethic norms and esthetic standards. Living in it, people is
(are) inevitably assimilated.

Due to the complexity of the relation between society and the individuals in it, it is not rigorous to claim that the appearance and behavior of individuals can surely tell much about their society’s ideas and values. In my opinion, more specific circumstance ought to be taken into account, and by delving into certain social values and ideas, we may have doubts to the statement above.

Admittedly, people usually dress and behave in accordance to the mainstream of social patterns. Thus, the way they look, dress, and act, to some extent, can reflect part of values and ideas that are acceptable in this culture or society.

However, the appearance and behavior of social members are far from enough for a thorough grasp of a society’s inner spiritual thing. If one merely looks through the western window, he or she would miss the view at the east side.

There exists the possibility that people dress and behave in certain way just for being “normal” or “legal” but not showing their real attitudes and interests. Take the ancient China as an example. Zhou Li Wang, a self-esteem and oppressive emperor, put anyone who said something not appeal to him to death sentences. People were all fear that one simple word would kill them. As an extreme result, even friends bump into each other could only contact in eye instead of making small conversations. In that case, people did not talk to each other, which actually resulted from tyranny, could be misinterpreted as the reflection of coldness among social members. Therefore, it is likely to draw a distorted picture about the values and ideas of society if the individual pattern is the only reference.

In addition, it becomes more difficult today to obtain acquaintance with a society’s values and ideas through observation of its people for the reason that globalization uniform diversity in different cultures and social groups. We can see people wearing T-shirts and blue jeans all over the world, eating hamburgers and drinking coke, and then what do those homogeneous phenomena manifest? Hence, owing to the process of globalization, the differences between cultures and societies tend to fade away gradually, and we may even find it impossible to detect representative information to study one certain society from its people’s appearance and behaviors following the global pattern.

In conclusion, a society’s values and ideas cannot totally reflected by the appearance and behavior of its individuals. And we should dig deeper to find the reality which may lie under the cover of false appearance.

The assertion that we could judge a society's ideas and values from the way people look, dress and act, from my perspective, is unfair. Although in some specific cases, we could tell something from the appearance and behavior of the people; in other respects,(分号前只是Although 引导的让步从句,还不是一句完整的句子) we should never do that.

For instance, a society with more people who are suffering from obesity suggests the people living in this region have the preference for convenience and enjoyment to a healthy diet and doing sports.(这句我认为有点逻辑问题,一个地区人们多肥胖,可能就是因为他们饮食不健康或不爱运动) Nevertheless, people's genes might contribute more to what they look like. Of course, some other reasons, such as the political ones and religious ones, also result in people's appearance and act instead of their attitudes and values. Gaydar, short for gay-radar, is a recent coinage in English popular culture. It denotes the ability to detect homosexuality in other people. The popularity of such a coinage hints a certain consistency between people’s external images and internal qualities. In fact, many people are inclined to form opinions about others based on their external representations which, I think, serve as partial statements of different values.

How individual chooses to look like demonstrates their identities. Such demonstration could be intentional. People of the same gender are physically the same. However, in order to stress individual identity, someone may choose to change their body. Examples of such kind could be as common as having a tattoo, or as extreme as altering the shape of organ. Identities can also be represented through unconscious behaviors, such as body languages and eye contact. They are very likely to give away one’s secretive thought or emotions. Clenching one’s fist suggests anger while licking one’s lip may have sexual implication. Lie to Me, a recently popular American TV series, tells stories about how a scientist aids the police in finding criminals through body languages analysis. Besides, good literatures often play up the atmosphere and underscore the character’s qualities by depicting their looks and behaviors.

Different cultures always pride on their own values and tend to preserve them. External images could be a very direct means to achieve these goals. During Cultural Revolution, clothes with flower patterns would be denoted as capitalism style and those who put on them would be considered as disloyal to communist revolution. The reason is that Chinese communism did not identify with capitalism. So they strictly adhered to dressing code opposite to countries such as USA and UK. By dressing differently, they manifested their own identity and prevent the population from “deteriorating” to capitalism. Similarly, the red dot on the foreheads of many Indians indicates their religious beliefs, in Hinduism or Buddhism. It marked their devotion and also advocate for their beliefs. These examples attest to that there is certain consistency between a culture’s image and its values. The images convey messages about their beliefs.

Since external representations could be reference of cultural and individual qualities, people tend to be stereotypical and judgmental. It is a common phenomenon that people leap to conclusion, upon first impression of a certain person or initial contact with some culture. Misunderstanding always ensues. Instead, people should be open-minded, and judgments should be formulated on an individual basis. After all, everyone is a unique being and there are always exceptions. External representations, rather than any universal principle, are only clues.

Birds of a feather flock together. The appearance and behavior do give away ideas and thought to some extent, be it that of an individual or of a cultre. It is a wonderful thing that the external representations of different ideas make the abstract diversity into a real-life kaleidoscope.

My suggestions on Zoe's response:

Due to the complexity of the relation between society and the individuals in it(too wordy), it is not rigorous(this is confusing) to claim that the appearance and behavior of individuals can surely(not an objective tone) tell much about their society’s ideas and values. In my opinion, more specific circumstance ought to be taken into account, and by delving into certain social values and ideas, we(avoid using "we") may have doubts to the statement above.

Admittedly, people usually dress and behave in accordance to the mainstream of social patterns(what are social patterns? this is an ambiguous phrase). Thus, the way they look, dress, and act, to some extent, can reflect part of values and ideas that are acceptable in this culture or society.

However, the appearance and behavior of social members are far from enough for(to form) a thorough grasp of a society’s inner spiritual thing(what is this?). If one merely looks through the western window, he or she would miss the view at the east side.

There exists the possibility that people dress and behave in a certain way just for being “normal” or “legal” but not showing their real attitudes and interests. Take the ancient China(your example is actually Zhou Li Wang ) as an example. Zhou Li Wang, a self-esteem(dignified) and oppressive emperor, put anyone who said something not appeal(appealing) to him to death sentences. People were all fear that one simple word would kill them (themselves). As an extreme result, even friends who bumped into each other could only contact in eye (made eye contact) instead of making small conversations. In that case, people did not talk to each other, which actually resulted from tyranny, could be misinterpreted as (which is) the reflection of coldness(indifference) among social members. Therefore, it is likely to draw a distorted picture about the values and ideas of society if the individual pattern is the only reference.

In addition, it becomes more difficult today to obtain acquaintance with a society’s values and ideas through observation of its people for the reason that globalization uniform (unifies) diversity in different cultures and social groups. We can see people wearing T-shirts and blue jeans all over the world, eating hamburgers and drinking coke, and then .What do those homogeneous phenomena manifest? (your answer is missing) Hence, owing to the process of globalization, the differences between cultures and societies tend to fade away gradually, and we may even find it impossible to detect representative information to study one certain society from its people’s appearance and behaviors following (characteristic of) the global pattern.

In conclusion, a society’s values and ideas cannot be totally reflected by the appearance and behavior of its individuals. And we should dig deeper to find the reality which may lie under the cover of false appearance.

多谢Ivy

就说到文化大革命中着装体现了identity也约束其他人"走资", 可能加这么一个意思比较好 for those who ever thought to put on western-style clothes would dread the possibility of being alienated.

it is not rigorous to claim that the appearance and behavior of individuals can surely tell much about their society’s ideas and values. rigorous

被rigorous干扰了, rigorous 一般不这么用吧, 建议你google一下"it is rigorous to" and "it is not rigorous to", google就是一个大的语料库, 你看看有没有人这么用, 如果有, 是谁用的, 是不是formal的文体...

Oxford Collocations Dictionary for Students of English, 2nd editionrigorous
adj. Rigorous is used with these nouns: check , curriculum , definition , discipline , enforcement , evaluation , examination , inspection , regime , research , schedule , scrutiny , standard , test , training
