Personalized education is designed according to the individual needs and interests of each student. In a personalized education, students are more enthusiastic in learning and the education itself is more productive. However, it is not feasible to carry out personalized education in all education phases. Moreover, effective education doesn¡¯t necessarily mean that we should promote personalized education.

In a personalized education, students¡¯ initiative makes it productive. As students¡¯ enthusiasm is aroused in learning what they need or love, they will actively participate in the discussion within or even outside the classroom, and bury into related books in order to get more information about their favorites. Students loving physics will spend more time on how to design an experiment. Students loving music will practice singing or playing instruments a lot. Students loving computer programming will try their best to make their program codes run more quickly. With so many efforts devoted into what they need or what they love, students learn quickly, make rapid progress and eventually be good at their favorites or even be a master. There are a lot of examples around us. Ding Junhui, the Chinese snooker player, loves snooker and has gotten full time practice in snooker since he was a kid. Finally he won champion in so many professional snooker tournaments.

However, no matter how good personalized education is, it is not feasible to apply it to all the phases in the whole education process of a student. Admittedly, some special geniuses discover their long-life talents or favorites when they are young. But most students, from kindergarten to middle school or even high school, are curious about new things and have very unstable interests. A student in these phases does not have knowledge broad enough to make sure one thing is his/her long-life favorite. Besides, students in these phases are more likely to have some unreasonable requests like reducing school hours and spending more hours on TV or computer games, which should never be satisfied. In contrast, students in college and especially graduate school not only have broader horizons, but also dig deeper into their majors and think deeper on what they want in their lives. Most of them have a clearer and more stable idea about what are their favorites and what they want. In this case, our investment on carrying out personalized education is more reasonable. In a word, personalized education is only applicable in the later phases in the whole education process.

Moreover, in order to make the education effective, we do not need to promote personalized education, if we see it through the purpose of education that education should turn each student into an integrated person. In my opinion, to be an integrated person through effective education, a student should learn the fundamental knowledge, evoke and improve basic abilities like communication, and setup basic moral standards like righteousness. Personalized education is not good at produce integrated person. The overwhelming focus on Ding Junhui¡¯s interest led to his weakness in communication and psychological quality. After a failure in a competition, he showed his anger and impolitely said he hated mass media just right before the camera and the interviewer. A worse example is malicious computer hacker. Some clever computer geniuses disregard laws and moral standards, and create software virus to steal personal information or even money in bank account of other people illegally. These negative examples indicate the importance of integrity in a person. And education has the obligation to produce integrated person.

To sum up, although education should pay attention to the needs and interests of each student, it should produce integrated persons, rather than simply satisfying the individual appetite of students.
