With the explosive development of science and technology the people tend to focus more on spiritual demand of human being itself. When it comes to whether artists or critics give society something of lasting value, there are always a host of different opinions held by different individuals. Did artists always demonstrate their masterpieces of art to public all by themselves? Admittedly, it is the artist who generates masterpieces, but out of question that the critic helps to spread them widely to public.
Admittedly, it is the artist who gives birth to their work of art rather than the critic. Facts in points may include that it was J.K. Rowling not a novel critic who wrote the most popular novel series Harry Potter, it was Van Gogh not a painting critic who painted the great painting of Sunflowers, it was James Cameron not a movie critic who shot the best-selling film Avator and it was Michael Jackson not a music critic who composed a bunch of wonderful songs. Critics are more like a grindstone, not like the artist as a sword. And only swords can cut through something, not grindstone.
However, as the essential of art is to explore the inner of human spiritual world, so it may not be easily understood by normal public. So results of that, though beauty as art works, ignorances of public on them could happen a lot within the circumstance that no one can helps public to discover and know the beauty of art works. Take agitata da due venti, an opera from a famous composer named Vivaldi for example, the opera is characterized as intensive varying of tunes and exaggerate facial actions of performers. With difficulty of understanding the opera's euphony, the public get caught by its funny characters instead.
On the other hand, acting as a bridge linking between artists and public, critics also bring feedback of public on how they feel about art works to artists. Though grindstone itself can’t cut through anything, however, its obligation of sharpen swords may enhances them, then swords
can cut through something more fast. Similarly, artists receive feedback of public constantly, can make adjustments in coming compositions of their works in order to avoid blind points of composing, and continuously compose well-known and well-told masterpieces.
In sum, even though critics themselves have no productivity, yet they do contribute to help artist to produce better. Literally, we need critics as buffer between artists and public, so we can ingest essentials of art and something of lasting value more thoroughly.
