Ethic is the principles of right and wrong that are accepted by an individual or a social group. Does social customs and ethics are determined by technologies? In my opinion, technologies what had been treated as the feature distinguished people from animals, actually influence social customs and ethics greatly. But technologies cannot determine ethics and customs for the reason that there are many other factors also influence the ethics and customs. In order to ensure that technology development always benefits people, we should use ethics to guide the developing of technologies rather than visa verse.

To begin with, technology plays an important role in the development of social ethics and customs. Some philosophers share the belief that person is a kind of animal which can create tools and use them. Here making tools and using them are on behalf of technologies. From the definition of person in philosophy, we can know how important technology is for social ethics and customs. Without the technology of using fire, we may remain be human-like apes rather persons, let alone establishing the civilization or the social ethics and customs today. Another example is the positions of the two sexes. In the matriarchy, females especially mothers had the central roles of political leadership and moral authority, which was partly determined by the fact that women had an advantage to suit the production technology in that time. But after moved from the matriarchy, most works required the burdensome and risky manual labor. Obviously, men were more fitted for doing these productions. As a result, the male dominated the world. This makes it clear that technology cannot great influence the social ethics and customs.

However, technologies cannot entirely determine the social customs and ethics, because the social customs and ethics are the result that various factors such as traditions, religions, and so on act together. For example, the Christmas comes from the religion. Even if China had the same technology level, Christmas would not have the similar meaning for Chinese with American. It is the American history and tradition to bring about the Thanksgiving Day but not technologies. Therefore, it is arbitrary to draw the conclusion that technologies determine the social customs and ethics.

Finally, ethics whose purpose is pursuing the uppermost kindness should be used to guide the development of society rather than being determined by technologies. The ultimate purpose of people developing technologies is making a better society in which human beings all can enjoy happiness and will never be disturbed by the problems of diseases, starvation, deaths and wars. However, technologies cannot ensure us by themselves that they will be used to benefit human beings. We can see no further than nuclear weapons which are developed by people just to kill each other. Technologies also bring many other problems such as reduction in forest area, extinction of species, water crisis and so on. Therefore, it is necessary to use ethics to guide the development of technology.

To sum up, the development of technology promotes the progress of society and technologies influence the social customs and ethics greatly. However, the former cannot entirely determine the latter. We should use the ethics to constrain the use of technology as well as making a better world through social customs and ethics.
