48"The study of history places too much emphasis on individuals. The most significant events and trends in history were made possible not by the famous few, but by groups of people whose identities have long been forgotten."
The speaker tends to claim that the history study emphasize the significance of individual a lot, while the influence of common people is often neglected. The most important issues happened in history, according to the speaker, became possible because of the unknown groups of people. The individuals with fame and prestige in history, however, are actually more decisive to the study of history than the general public, as mostly they are the trigger and fuse of the vital incidents and by studying them, historians can identify their traits, backgrounds and so on, which can be typical, so as to get deeper and more comprehensive understanding of the times. Along with the crucial role individuals played, nevertheless, historians should also percieve the fact that it is the mass and unknown people in the past that made the critical incidents happened.
To begin with, the noted persons in the history is the concentration of the history study, because they led the trend or the momentous occasions were triggered by them. And thus studying these VIP makes great contributions to the history research. Gandhi, who was the leader of the Indian nationalist movement and the Congress Party, planned and organized numerous significant nonviolent pretests, which helps to promote the India to to break away from the dominaion of U.K. and gain its indendence. Historians, by studing his experience, believes, values and propositions, can get more accurate understanding on the historical incidents’ background, cause and effect.
Besides, the historical figures are often equipped with the specific traits, backgrounds and experience that can represent their era. Take the three renowned artists in the Renaissance for instance. By receiving knowledge that not only did Da Vinci make dedication to the sociey with hisbrilliant ast works, but he also did such a deep research in many fields of nature science, such as anatomy and astronomy, that he boosted the overall development of science at that time, and therefore had osmosis on the generations of scientists to come. Raphael, on the other hand, performed his art and thoughts in a manner of harmony and perfection, and bequeathed the posterity with techniques and ideas on how to create such style of art works. In addition, Michelangelo filled his sculpture and masterpiece with his cogitation on the humanism and Reformation. Albiet the three pretigious had their own features in art, on the whole they benefit the human being, and learning abour these historical individuals greatly helps researchers to get deeper and comprehensive understanding of the past.
Yet, necessary is the study of celebrated persons, the importance of unknown public in history should also be underlined. Without the unsung groups of people, the VIPs would not have power and labor to complete their feat. Without the uncelebrated people, the historial individuals would not have been supported and remembered by descendants. Hence historians should pay attention to the unknown and unsung people in history’s study.
In conclusion, the study of history should not emphasize the significance of individuals too much. Yet historians should also not that the unidentified people are essential for the crucial events to happen. |
