issue 88: Technologies not only influence but actualy determine social customs and ethics
keyword:
1.ethics: the branch of philosophy, concerned with good and evil.
concepts such as good and evil, right and wrong, virtue and vice, justice
In retrospective, every time with the innovation of new technologies, the way of people's life dramtically chaged.
In my opinion, technologies have great influence on social customs even actualy changed it gradully, but have little
influence on the ethics.
In the first place, with the advent of new technologies, people's lives have great changed from before. With the population
of internet, communication between people become more and more convienent. The online social network becomes more and more
popular among the people all around the world. It provides a way for people to exhibit their talent, share their opinion,
even make advisement of their products. This dramatically changed the way of people making friends. Everyone has chances to
become popular among others with it, no matter he is a real person or a company. It even changed the way of HR to find talents
in their fields. Now it becomes an important way for people to connect with others. Another example is the population of
smart phones like IPhone and Android phone. There is a trendency that these smart phones will replace personal computer fianlly.
People are so enthusiastic about the applications released on these smart phones that they can not live without them.
They can watch videos, take pictures, send emails, navigatation and share everything they get with their firends at real time.
They become a impportant part of people's lives, and becomes a culture which has the great impact on the social customs.
No matter how great the technoloies changed people's lives and customs, the ethics will change little. The ethinc is moral philosiphy which
concerns about good and evil, right and wrong, virtue and vice, justice. From ancient time to now, people's basic standards of moral
changed little, like repectation to seniors, helping vulnerable groups.... These basic enthic changed little all the time. Admittly, some
aspects of people's moral standard changed with the time, but in my oponion, it has more to do with the policy of the govement than the technology.
As an example, with the huge pressure of houses' price in China, lots people's conception of marriage changed dramatically.
Tranditional ethinc of love even does not exist without affording an house. Someone may say that urbanization causes the high demands than supply of houses in big citis.
and the advent of high speed of transportation makes urbanization possible. But I say no,
new technologies make transportaion more faster, make the period of construction much more shorter,
they give people great chance to take a look at the outside world and make better lives. People should have more freedom to choose where they live and what kind of life they want
with the technologes. They deserve better lives instead of worse. Only the policy of govement can take advantage of technology and have great impact on people's lives even enthic opinions.
Technology is just a tool, no evil or good. Another example is the cloning , someone may say that will changed people's ethnic by creating new lives manually.
But again what clone could bring us is organic transportation without rejection, saving endange species... all those cases match the basic ethnic standards of human beings.
What can change our conception of good and evil is what we will do by taking advantage of the technology, evil or good, that's our choice.
In a summary, technoloies have a great impact on people's daily life, they changed the social customs gradully, but they have nothing to do with changing
people's ethic, only the way people taking use of technologies will change ethics. |
